At SleepFoundation.org, we conduct extensive first-person experience tests on all but a select few products. This hands-on approach allows us to provide accurate, data-driven recommendations for mattresses, pillows, sheets, and other sleep essentials.
Guidelines for our testing methodology are as follows:
Every member of our team brings years of industry experience and knowledge to our hands-on evaluations. In addition to testing products, we’ve spoken to sleep experts and toured manufacturing sites.
Our testers fall into different categories based on body type, sleep position, and personal preferences. This level of diversity helps to ensure our product ratings are holistic and inclusive of all sleepers.
Each type of sleep product is tested using a unique set of performance criteria. We also assign ratings based on feedback from testers who fall into specific categories based on weight and sleep position (i.e. side sleepers who weigh 130 to 230 pounds).
We do not personally test CPAP equipment, anti-snoring mouthguards, supplements, and other medical devices that require a doctor's prescription. Rather than using specific rating criteria, we rely on our team's extensive knowledge of sleep products and medical industry standards to pair each reader with the right devices. These evaluations are also based on material and design quality, features, and other noteworthy product attributes.
The Purple RestorePlus Hybrid Mattress stands out for its ability to cradle the body like foam while staying cooler than most other mattresses. A proprietary GelFlex Grid layer reinforced with zoned pocketed coils helps keep the spine aligned and relieve pressure in the shoulders, lower back, and hips.

Most sleepers over 230 pounds require a firmer mattress
When Purple launched via Kickstarter in 2015, the company offered foam mattresses containing GelFlex Grid technology. This material, formerly called the Purple Grid, is a hyper-elastic polymer that cradles the body to alleviate pressure points without trapping heat like memory foams.
The Purple RestorePlus Hybrid Mattress contains this GelFlex Grid atop a zoned pocketed coil support core. With a medium (5) firmness level, the RestorePlus is a balanced mattress that works well for a variety of sleepers.
We brought the Purple RestorePlus Hybrid into our Test Lab to measure how it performs in different areas such as motion isolation, pressure relief, and temperature control. Learn how it stacks up with other mattresses on the market, and whether or not it would be a good fit for your unique needs.

“I wasn’t sure if I’d feel properly supported on the RestorePlus, because I generally prefer medium firm beds, but I liked this model. This mattress worked well for me and stayed exceptionally cool throughout the night.”

Side Sleepers
In our testing, the Purple RestorePlus Hybrid performed best for side sleepers. The GelFlex Grid and zoned pocketed coil support core allow heavier body parts to sink into the bed a bit, but keep them from sinking in too far. This combination promotes spinal alignment and helps prevent discomfort that can form in the lower back of side sleepers when the spine becomes misaligned.
Side sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds gave the Purple RestorePlus excellent ratings. Side sleepers that weigh more than 230 pounds can still find comfort on the bed, but may prefer a firmer mattress.
Back Sleepers
Like side sleepers, most back sleepers will find the Purple RestorePlus Hybrid comfortable. Its medium (5) feel provides adequate support to back sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds. For these sleepers, the mattress allows the body to lightly sink into the bed a bit without the hips compressing too much or the lower back feeling strained.
The GelFlex Grid and polyfoam comfort system cushion the body to evenly distribute weight without causing pressure to build. However, back sleepers weighing over 230 pounds might feel better supported on a firmer mattress.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers on our team weighing less than 130 pounds found the Purple RestorePlus Mattress comfortable and sufficiently supportive. For this group, the bed provides a soothing combination of plushness and reinforcement.
Our testing found that the many stomach sleepers weighing 130 or more will prefer a mattress that is firmer than the Purple RestorePlus. Their heavier hips can sink too deeply into the bed, creating pressure points that lead to strain in the neck and lower back.
Mattress Performance
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Motion Isolation
8.5
/ 10
“I felt little to no motion when lying side by side with someone else on the Purple RestorePlus. The GelFlex Grid layer nicely muffles and isolates movements.” – Colin
Couples should enjoy the Purple RestorePlus Hybrid because it absorbs motion better than most competing hybrids. That means co-sleepers who share a bed are less likely to disturb one another when rolling over or getting up during the night.
The GelFlex Grid comfort layer plays a major role in the RestorePlus’ ability to isolate motion. Pocketed coils in the support core also help because they can be compressed individually without impacting the other coils around them.
Pressure Relief
8
/ 10
“I felt very comfortable sleeping on my side and back, but a little pressure developed if I stayed on my stomach for too long.” – Mary
The flexible and conforming GelFlex Grid layer in the Restore Plus cushions the body and relieves pressure for most sleepers. People report feeling like their body weight is evenly distributed across the bed’s surface, as a result of how this layer acts in combination with the polyfoam and coils below it.
Most sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds won’t experience too much pressure buildup when lying on the RestorePlus Hybrid. However, the mattress is a bit better at relieving pressure for side and back sleepers than for stomach sleepers.
Temperature Control
9.5
/ 10
“The Purple RestorePlus Hybrid is likely one of the best temperature-regulating mattresses on the market. I stayed cool all night long.” – Brad
The construction of the RestorePlus combined with the nature of its materials make it an excellent mattress for people who struggle with sleeping hot.
Thousands of columns in the GelFlex Grid, along with the support core coils, allow body heat to dissipate as cool air flows through the open spaces. As a result, heat doesn’t usually build up beneath sleepers lying on this bed, which can commonly occur on mattresses containing denser materials like memory foam.
Edge Support
6.5
/ 10
“I didn’t feel at risk of rolling off the bed when I slept near the edge, but the edges did fold somewhat when I sat directly on them.” – Mary
Edge support on the Purple RestorePlus Hybrid is about average. Most sleepers will feel secure on the edge of this mattress, but heavier weight sleepers and people who regularly use the edge of the bed for leverage may want to opt for a model with stronger edges.
Past Purple Mattress models have struggled with edge support, due to the flexible nature of the GelFlex Grid. This model has been upgraded with a polyfoam perimeter around the GelFlex Grid layer, which adds support and stability. The pocketed coil support core also has a reinforced perimeter that contributes to edge support.
Ease of Movement
7
/ 10
“Whether I was getting in and out of bed or rolling over from one side to the other, moving around on this mattress felt easy to me.” – Colin
Ease of movement is average on the Purple RestorePlus Hybrid. Although the mattress provides cushioning, it doesn’t “hug” the body or conform the way memory foam does. As a result, most people can easily change sleeping positions or get out of bed without feeling the resistance that is sometimes present with memory foam.
At the same time, the GelFlex Grid is flexible and doesn’t push back in response to the body’s movements, so it doesn’t provide the same leverage or bounce that facilitates movement on some other mattress models. People with reduced strength or mobility may prefer a firmer or more responsive mattress, if a cushiony feel makes movement on the bed’s surface more difficult.
Durability
7
/ 10
Most hybrid mattresses last for 6.5 to 7.5 years before they need to be replaced, and this is our estimated lifespan for the Purple RestorePlus. While the GelFlex Grid is denser and more durable than traditional memory foam, the polyfoam components will likely wear out and affect the bed’s overall stability.
The Purple RestorePlus Hybrid Mattress has a medium (5) firmness level. Its 13-inch profile provides space for a thick comfort system and coil support core, all of which are encased in a cover made from a blend of polyester, rayon, and elastane. This cover also has a finish intended to resist microbes and wick away moisture.

This cover also has a finish intended to resist microbes and wick away moisture.
The comfort system contains a 3-inch layer of GelFlex Grid above a polyfoam layer. GelFlex Grid is Purple’s proprietary hyper-elastic polymer poured into a grid shape, which contains thousands of individual columns. Thanks to this configuration, the GelFlex Grid can quickly conform and move in response to the body while resisting heart retention.
Beneath the GelFlex Grid, a layer of polyfoam adds to the bed’s ability to provide comfort and support. A polyfoam edge also surrounds the GelFlex Grid to bolster the mattress’ edge support.
An 8-inch layer of pocketed coils sits beneath the comfort system. This layer provides support, bounce, and additional cooling airflow. This layer is also zoned to feel more supportive beneath the midsection, promote spinal alignment, and stabilize the perimeter for strong edge support.
