Side Sleepers

Our testing team found that the Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance Mattress provides significant comfort and support to most side sleepers under 230 pounds.

The mattress includes layers of different foam formulations, including copper-infused memory foam that contours to the body. These foams offer dependable cushioning around pressure points like the shoulders and hips.

The amount of sink and contouring depends on the firmness level. Our analysis found that the medium soft (4) model worked best for side sleepers under 130 pounds. They could benefit from the softer feel without experiencing excessive sinkage.

Our results show that side sleepers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds are more likely to get quality support from the medium firm (6) or firm (7) models. Side sleepers over 230 pounds tend to do best on the firm (7) model because the softer options permit too much sink.

Back Sleepers

During our testing, back sleepers under 230 pounds gave solid ratings to the firm (7) version of the ThermoBalance Mattress. They found that the firmer surface did a better job supporting the midsection and holding the spine in a neutral position.

The medium firm (6) option received split opinions from back sleepers on our team. Those under 130 pounds gave it solid reviews, and some between 130 and 230 pounds liked it, too. But many of our testers said it felt a bit too plush to give them a flat, supportive sleeping surface.

Based on our testing, the ThermoBalance Mattress is not a great fit for back sleepers over 230 pounds. These sleepers said that all three models lacked ideal firmness, causing their torso to sink down too deeply into the bed.

Stomach Sleepers

In our testing process, the firm (7) model of the ThermoBalance Mattress was most supportive for stomach sleepers. It earned the highest marks from stomach sleepers under 130 pounds, who experienced a stable sleep surface with light cushioning.

Stomach sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds received adequate support from the firm (7) model, but most said that they prefer a firmer mattress. Virtually all of our stomach sleepers over 230 pounds said that even the firmest version of the ThermoBalance Mattress was too soft. They could feel their abdomen sinking into the mattress, and product analyses have shown this can lead to poor spinal alignment.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

8.5 / 10

Medium Soft: 9.5 / 10

Medium Firm: 8.5 / 10

Firm: 7.5 / 10

“I found all of the ThermoBalance models to have solid motion isolation. The softest model really stood out in this category as it was almost completely vibration-free.” – Jeremy

The ThermoBalance’s ability to isolate motion impressed our testing team. The foam materials, especially the memory foam layer, absorbed vibrations so that movement on the other side of the bed was barely noticeable.

As expected, motion isolation was best on the medium soft (4) model, which more closely contours to the body. However, any of the firmness options should work well for couples who want to avoid sleep disruptions from a bed partner’s movement.

Pressure Relief

8.5 / 10

Medium Soft: 9 / 10

Medium Firm: 8.5 / 10

Firm: 7.5 / 10

“The combination of foam layers was really effective at cushioning my pressure points. I got the best results with a bit more firmness, but if you want to be hugged by your mattress, choose the softest model.” – Colin

As we evaluated the ThermoBalance Mattress, we consistently found that it effectively cushioned hot spots and pressure points to promote more comfortable sleep.

Memory foam is the driving force behind this pressure relief, but its effect is enhanced by the surrounding foam layers and the responsive pocketed coils in the support core.

The softest model hugs the body the most, which for some sleepers, including many side sleepers, delivers more pressure relief. However, some sleepers, especially stomach and back sleepers, may find that the contouring on softer models provides less support for their spinal alignment.

Temperature Control

8 / 10

Medium Soft: 6.5 / 10

Medium Firm: 7 / 10

Firm: 8.5 / 10

“Brooklyn Bedding includes multiple technologies to reduce overheating, but I still felt some heat retention from the foams. The firmest model slept the coolest in my experience.” – Mary

One of Brooklyn Bedding’s key design priorities for the ThermoBalance Mattress was to minimize heat retention on the surface and promote cool sleep. Our testing team found that the cooling features built into the mattress were beneficial, but only to a point.

Copper-infused foam, open-cell foam, and heat-dissipating fabrics are engineered for temperature regulation, but they don’t eliminate all heat buildup. That’s especially true on the medium soft (4) version. Because that model conforms closely around the body, it can limit airflow and trap heat during the night.

Based on our testing, hot sleepers are most likely to sleep comfortably on the firm (7) model. Any of the models should have enough temperature regulation for people who rarely sleep hot.

Edge Support

7 / 10

Medium Soft: 5.5 / 10

Medium Firm: 6.5 / 10

Firm: 7.5 / 10

“You can feel additional softness around the outside of the ThermoBalance. As you would expect, edge support was best on the firm model and worst on the soft version.” – Mary

Our team found that the thick layers of foam in the ThermoBalance Mattress compressed most noticeably around the edges. The medium soft (4) and medium firm (6) models, which allow more sink, provided weaker edge support. Even with the thick coils in the support core, the softest model got well below-average ratings for edge support from our testers.

Overall, sleepers who need a highly dependable perimeter, including people who tend to sit near the edge of their bed, should select the firm (7) model, which has slightly above-average edge support.

Ease of Movement

6.5 / 10

Medium Soft: 5.5 / 10

Medium Firm: 6 / 10

Firm: 7 / 10

“There’s a lot of material between the coils and the top of the mattress, so there isn’t a lot of bounce. I felt that all but the firm model of the ThermoBalance had some movement restriction.” – Colin

Our tests found that the ThermoBalance Mattress rated below-average to average for ease of movement. This is similar to other mattresses with thick foam layers because foam materials tend to offer minimal bounce.

The pocketed coils in the ThermoBalance create some springiness, but that bounce gets absorbed by the foam layers above them. As a result, our testers had to exert some effort to adjust their sleeping position.

Of the three firmness options, the firm (7) provided the best ease of movement in our testing. Because it allows more sink, the medium soft (4) model scored lowest in this category.

Durability

7 / 10

Medium Soft: 6 / 10

Medium Firm: 7 / 10

Firm: 7 / 10

The Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance has a dependable design that should hold up well for at least 6 to 7 years. The softer model will likely develop impressions and dips in its surface before the medium firm and firm models. These impressions can make the bed feel uneven and uncomfortable for sleep, and are typically the first signs a mattress is nearing the end of its lifespan.

The ThermoBalance is in line with other foam hybrids in terms of expected lifespan. While this is not the most durable mattress type, foam hybrids can reliably support sleepers for at least 6 years with proper care and regular rotations.

Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance Review Breakdown

The Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance is a hybrid mattress that is 13.75 inches thick. Its soft cover is made with specialty fibers designed to pull away and dissipate body heat.

Beneath the cover, the top layer is .75 inches of polyfoam that includes a phase change material (PCM) engineered to maintain temperature neutrality. As the layer closest to the body, this foam is intended to prevent heat from building up and affecting your sleep.

The next four layers are also made of foam, but their exact placement varies based on the firmness level you choose. In the medium firm (6) model, the first of these foam layers is .75 inches of quilted foam. Below that are a 1-inch layer of copper-infused memory foam, a 1.5-inch layer of high-density, copper-infused memory foam, and a 1-inch layer of firmer polyfoam.

The foam layers rest on top of a support core made with pocketed coils that are 8 inches tall. Each coil is encased in fabric for better motion isolation, and the coils around the perimeter are reinforced to increase edge support. The bottom layer is .75 inches of dense polyfoam that dampens sound and vibration while giving the mattress a sturdy base.
