At SleepFoundation.org, we conduct extensive first-person experience tests on all but a select few products. This hands-on approach allows us to provide accurate, data-driven recommendations for mattresses, pillows, sheets, and other sleep essentials.
Guidelines for our testing methodology are as follows:
Every member of our team brings years of industry experience and knowledge to our hands-on evaluations. In addition to testing products, we’ve spoken to sleep experts and toured manufacturing sites.
Our testers fall into different categories based on body type, sleep position, and personal preferences. This level of diversity helps to ensure our product ratings are holistic and inclusive of all sleepers.
Each type of sleep product is tested using a unique set of performance criteria. We also assign ratings based on feedback from testers who fall into specific categories based on weight and sleep position (i.e. side sleepers who weigh 130 to 230 pounds).
We do not personally test CPAP equipment, anti-snoring mouthguards, supplements, and other medical devices that require a doctor's prescription. Rather than using specific rating criteria, we rely on our team's extensive knowledge of sleep products and medical industry standards to pair each reader with the right devices. These evaluations are also based on material and design quality, features, and other noteworthy product attributes.

Founded in 2019, Birch Living is an eco-focused sleep and home goods brand with a wide product line that includes mattresses, bed frames, and bedding. There are five mattresses in Birch’s current lineup, and the Birch Essential is one of the brand’s most cost-conscious options.
The Birch Essential has a firm (7) feel that can accommodate many body types and sleep positions. It uses a hybrid design, combining a natural latex comfort layer with a pocketed coil core.
Our team of experienced mattress experts put the Birch Essential through a series of tests to get a better understanding of how it performs in the real world. We’ll share our findings, break down the construction, and highlight key policies you should be aware of before deciding if the Birch Essential is the budget-friendly latex hybrid you’re looking for.

Testing Team Takeaways
To test the Birch Essential, we had three people on our testing team each take the bed home with them for one week. Here are their initial observations.

“For me, the Birch Essential was pretty spot on. Thanks to its firm feel, I didn’t feel like I was sagging into the bed. I also stayed cool throughout the night.”

“I love a good organic latex mattress, and it’s hard to beat the price of the Birch Essential. As a side sleeper, I could have used a little more conforming for my shoulders and hips, but the value of the mattress is undeniable.”

“Changing positions on the Birch Essential was nearly effortless for me. I favored sleeping on my back and stomach more than usual because I felt so well supported in those positions. Side sleeping was a little less comfortable, though, since there wasn’t a lot of give around my hips or shoulders.”

Side Sleepers
When side sleepers choose a mattress, contouring and pressure relief are usually some of the top considerations. The Birch Essential has moderate contouring, with a latex comfort layer that adjusts to the shape of the sleeper and an 8-inch coil core to supply deeper cradling.
In our testing, this limited hug appealed most to side sleepers over 230 pounds. They were able to sink in deeply enough to notice the material molding subtly to their bodies. Those weighing up to 230 pounds noticed more pressure buildup around their shoulders and hips since these areas didn’t compress the mattress as much.
Back Sleepers
The Birch Essential’ firm (7) feel and supportive design are well suited to back sleeping. Its latex comfort layer helps cushion the lumbar region without allowing excessive sinkage. For many back sleepers, this creates a fairly even plane to maintain a neutral spinal position.
This was most true for back sleepers on our testing team between 130 and 230 pounds, who found the support and contouring optimal. Those over 230 pounds also gave it high marks, though some would have liked extra support around their hips. Meanwhile, testers under 130 pounds could sleep on their backs comfortably enough, but most would have preferred more cushioning.
Stomach Sleepers
Of all sleeper groups, stomach sleepers typically need the most support to maintain healthy posture in bed. Because of this, the Birch Essential is a strong option for many who favor the stomach position. Its latex comfort layer softens the surface, but at .75 inches thick, the comfort system also doesn’t leave a lot of room for a stomach sleeper’s midsection to sink deeply and pull their spine out of alignment.
While our stomach-sleeping testers across weight groups found this model comfortable, it was the best fit for those between 130 and 230 pounds. They sank in enough to enjoy the surface-level cushioning without feeling like they were compressing the mattress too deeply. Sleepers under 130 pounds were also generally enthused about the support, but some thought the mattress felt a bit too firm against their bodies
The mattress was supportive enough to satisfy many of our testers over 230 pounds, though some testers would have preferred a bit more lift around the midsection.
Mattress Performance
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Motion Isolation
6
/ 10
“I could feel vibrations when someone moved on the other side of the bed. It wasn’t a dealbreaker for me, but I might think twice if I were a really light sleeper.” – Colin
During our testing, we detected moderate vibration transfer on the surface of the Birch Essential. The design helps limit the spread of vibrations to an extent, with pocketed coils that can move independently of each other so that individual springs aren’t as affected by their neighbors compressing. However, the responsive materials and firmer feel still allow some motion to spread.
Sleepers who share their bed with a partner prone to tossing and turning may notice some movement, especially if they awaken easily.
Pressure Relief
6.5
/ 10
“The Birch Essential let my shoulders and hips sink into the bed a little, but it didn’t mold to my body or redistribute pressure the way I’ve seen in softer models or those that use memory foam.” – Jeremy
By design, the Birch Essential has a firm (7) feel, so it doesn’t offer deep contouring. At the same time, the .75-inch latex comfort layer and pocketed coil core let the heavier and wider areas of a sleeper’s body sink in more deeply to limit pressure buildup around critical regions.
In our testing lab, we mapped pressure points when testers laid on the bed and observed moderate redistribution. That said, team members under 130 pounds who sleep on their sides noticed buildup around their hips and shoulders.
Temperature Control
9.5
/ 10
“This bed stayed cool and comfortable. I barely noticed any heat buildup.” – Mary
The Birch Essential’s exceptional temperature control sets it apart from many models on the market. Its cotton cover, latex comfort layer, and coil core all allow air to circulate through the mattress so that heat can dissipate. For an additional charge, hot sleepers can also add on graphite strips engineered to redistribute body heat.
Even without the upgrade designed for cooling, our testing showed very little heat retention on the surface. Team members also reported remaining a neutral temperature throughout the testing process.
Edge Support
7.5
/ 10
“The edge of the bed felt secure enough that I continued using it. It isn’t the sturdiest edge I’ve encountered, but I think most sleepers will get the support they need.” – Colin
Compared to other latex hybrid mattresses, the Birch Essential’s edge support is around average. The firm (7) feel and the reinforced perimeter of the coil core help limit sinkage along the edge. For couples and anyone who frequently sits or sleeps on the far side of the bed, a supportive perimeter may be particularly important.
None of our testers felt they needed to stay away from the edge to feel secure on the mattress, but those over 230 pounds did notice the compression more.
Ease of Movement
9
/ 10
“The Birch Essential’s natural buoyancy and slight bounce made it easy for me to move on the surface.” – Jeremy
The Birch Essential is quite easy to move on, which is what we’d anticipate from most models with a similar design and firmness. The Birch Essential doesn’t hug the sleeper very closely, and it has a responsive feel thanks to its latex comfort layer and pocketed coil system.
Combination sleepers on our testing team noted that position changes were seamless and nearly effortless.
Durability
8
/ 10
Both latex mattresses and hybrid models tend to outlast other designs, so it goes without saying that we typically expect latex hybrid models to be long-lived. Despite its budget pricing, the Birch Essential is no exception.
Based on its materials and construction, we’d expect the Birch Essential to last around 7 years or more with normal use and proper care. Its latex comfort system is resilient and relatively thin, which may help limit the formation of indentations that could affect comfort. Pocketed coil systems also usually age well.
Many latex mattresses fall toward the higher end of the average price range, but the Birch Essential is an affordable model that focuses on quality without unnecessary bells and whistles that add cost. This firm (7) hybrid latex bed measures 9 inches thick, putting it on the lower end of the profile range.

The Birch Essential starts with a cotton cover to let air circulate into and out of the mattress. Directly beneath the cover, a .75-inch layer of natural latex adds responsive contouring. The latex is certified organic by Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS), which verifies its contents and confirms the material meets certain environmental standards.
The support core consists of 8-inch pocketed coils primarily made from recycled steel. This layer provides stability for the entire mattress, and also promotes air circulation to maintain a comfortable interior temperature. The perimeter is reinforced to extend the usable surface area. A final fire-retardant fiber layer rests beneath the coils.
While the Birch Essential stays cool due to its breathable design, sleepers who run exceptionally hot might also consider the optional add-on cooling layer, which incorporates graphite strips engineered to transfer heat away from the sleeper.

Shipping
When purchased through the Birch website, the Birch Essential ships free throughout the contiguous U.S. Shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada is also available at a charge.
Orders within the contiguous U.S. ship via FedEx. The Birch Essential arrives compressed, rolled, and boxed, and it is up to the owner to move the mattress inside and unpack it. This may require two people, especially since models with latex, like the Birch Essential, tend to be heavier.

Sleep Trial
Orders through the Birch website come with a 120-night trial. Once you’ve tried the Birch Essential for at least 30 nights, you can initiate a return if you decide it isn’t what you’re looking for. Birch will suggest an exchange that may be a better fit for you or organize a return. The company will then have the unwanted mattress removed for you.
Warranty
The Birch Essential comes with a partially prorated limited lifetime warranty for the original purchaser using the bed for its intended purposes. Eligible defects in material and workmanship may include deterioration causing an indentation over 1.5 inches deep, physical flaws that cause cracking or splitting, and manufacturing defects in the cover.
During the first 10 years, the coverage is non-prorated, and Birch will repair or replace mattresses it confirms are defective. From year 11 on, prorated rates apply for mattress replacements.
The policy does not cover comfort preferences, normal softening, or damage from abuse or misuse.
