Jeremy is a sleep product tester with a passion for methodology and data collection. He’s spent the last six years at Sleep Foundation testing nearly every mattress, pillow, and sheet on the market, and has gained a holistic understanding of how to get the most accurate and universal results possible. When he’s not working, Jeremy likes to make music, play tennis, and watch old movies.
Our team at Sleep Foundation conducts extensive hands-on tests for each mattress to provide you with the most reliable, data-driven recommendations and reviews. Below are key guidelines that inform our testing methodology:
Our testers lie on the surface of each mattress to evaluate factors such as contouring and support. We also use specialized tools to measure performance criteria like pressure relief, heat retention, and motion isolation.
We test each mattress using various sleep positions to observe whether a mattress is better suited for side, back, or stomach sleeping. We roll around the surface and sit on the edges to gauge ease of movement and perimeter support.
We have tested hundreds of mattresses and bring years of experience in the mattress industry to the test lab. Our testing team covers a wide range of sleep preferences, sleep positions, and body types. This helps us represent as many sleeper types as possible in our reviews.
Designed for people who want a firm mattress, the Avocado Extra Firm features responsive latex and coils that offer solid support for back and stomach sleepers. The mattress is constructed with organic and natural materials that should also appeal to eco-conscious shoppers.

Pros
Optimal firmness for many back and stomach sleepers
Since launching in 2016, Avocado has made eco-conscious and sustainable production a primary focus. The Avocado Extra Firm Mattress is a 10.5-inch mattress that has been designed specifically for sleepers seeking a sturdy, supportive feel.
Our testing team rated this mattress an 8 out of 10 on our firmness scale, making it noticeably firmer than most competing models on the market. It is built with cotton, latex, and wool that are all certified organic, and its support core features robust, multi-zone pocketed coils.
We brought the Avocado Extra Firm into our Test Lab to analyze all aspects of its performance. We go over our findings and cover other details that can help you decide if this is the right mattress for you.

Testing Team Takeaways
To test the Avocado Extra Firm Mattress, we had three people on our testing team each take the bed home with them for one week. Here are their initial observations.

This mattress is perfect for some but not meant for everyone. Unfortunately, I’m in the latter group as I found it too firm to properly cushion my hips and shoulders.

Although a bit firmer than I tend to prefer, I loved how easy it was to shift between sleeping positions on this mattress. And the sturdy surface felt very supportive when lying on my back or stomach.

Like Jeremy, I found the cushioning and contouring on this mattress lacking for me as a side sleeper. On the positive side, this mattress slept extremely cool.

Side Sleepers
During our testing, the Avocado Extra Firm was most supportive for side sleepers weighing over 230 pounds. These sleepers appreciated the sturdiness of the mattress and its ability to keep them from sagging too deeply into the bed. However, many still felt it was a bit firmer than they would like.
For side sleepers up to 230 pounds, the Avocado Extra Firm did not contour closely enough. It lacked cushioning to relieve pressure around the hips and shoulders, making the mattress less comfortable and less conducive to proper spinal alignment.
Back Sleepers
The back sleepers on our testing were big fans of the Avocado Extra Firm. The highest ratings came from our back sleepers over 230 pounds.
In this sleeping position, it’s essential that a mattress not sag under the midsection because this is where most people carry a higher proportion of their weight. The Avocado Extra Firm remains steady under the midsection thanks to its firm (8) feel and responsive materials. At the same time, the mattress has just enough cushioning to gently cradle the natural curve of the lower back.
Stomach Sleepers
We found that the Avocado Extra Firm was a hit among stomach sleepers weighing 130 pounds or more. These sleepers find many mattresses to be too soft, but that wasn’t a concern for them on this model.
With its robust design and feel, the Avocado Extra Firm helped stomach sleepers stay in a flat and even position. Unlike on softer beds, they didn’t feel suffocated by this mattress. In fact, most stomach sleepers on our team felt that its responsiveness helped keep their spines aligned, reducing their chances of waking up with lower back pain.
Performance Ratings
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Motion Isolation
6
/ 10
“This mattress is firm and bouncy, which translates to quite a bit of motion transfer. I definitely felt vibrations when there was movement on the other side of the mattress.” – Jeremy
During our tests, the Avocado Extra Firm Mattress scored below average for motion isolation. The combination of latex and coils results in a springy feel, and there’s virtually no softness to absorb the vibrations caused by movement on one side of the bed.
For our testers, this meant that they could feel their half of the mattress shake lightly when their bed partner moved around or got in and out of bed.
If you sleep lightly and wake easily, this mattress may not be right for you, especially if you share your bed with someone who frequently tosses and turns during the night.
Pressure Relief
7
/ 10
“This mattress isn’t designed for cushioning or pressure relief. But for a lot of back and stomach sleepers, the firm feel actually promotes spinal alignment.” – Mary
During our testing, the Avocado Extra Firm Mattress rated around average for pressure relief. It doesn’t have much contouring or deep cushioning like mattresses that are known for standout pressure relief. In fact, sleepers may find that the firm (8) feel can cause impact on joints, leading to pressure buildup.
But not everyone benefits from deep contouring. Many back and stomach sleepers, especially those who weigh 130 pounds or more, need a mattress to keep their body in an even plane to avoid pressure in the lower back. For that reason, the Avocado Extra Firm can help some sleepers manage painful pressure points even though it doesn’t have the typical characteristics of a great mattress for pressure relief.
Temperature Control
9
/ 10
“I didn’t detect any heat retention on this mattress, so it’s a real winner for people who normally sleep hot.” – Colin
Excellent temperature neutrality was one of the standout elements of the Avocado Extra Firm’s performance in our testing.
In every layer, this mattress has materials that can help fight off overheating. Cotton and wool are airy and breathable. Latex naturally fends off heat buildup, and airflow around the coils helps keep the support core cool.
At the same time, because you don’t sink into the mattress, it’s easier for your body to naturally cool itself down at night.
All of these factors contribute to the high rating for temperature control, making this mattress a good choice for hot sleepers who like a firmer bed.
Edge Support
8
/ 10
“The edge felt strong and sturdy, and I had no issues even when sitting there to put on my shoes.” – Mary
The Avocado Extra Firm impressed our testing team with its firm and sturdy build from edge to edge. While there was a bit more sink around the perimeter than in the center of the Avocado Extra Firm, this is true of virtually every mattress.
Ultimately, our testers had no problem sleeping near the perimeter, sitting on the edge of the bed, or using the entire mattress surface.
Ease of Movement
9
/ 10
“The bouncy, rebound effect of both the coils and latex meant that it was easy for me to turn over in bed or move around on the Avocado Extra Firm.” – Jeremy
In our tests, the Avocado Extra Firm earned excellent ratings for ease of movement. The firm (8) feel kept sleepers from sinking into the mattress, and the interior materials kept the surface feeling springy. As a result, none of our testers reported feeling stuck in place while lying on this mattress.
The strong performance in this category makes the Avocado Extra Firm a good fit for combination sleepers who shift between different sleeping positions, especially if they sleep mostly on their back or stomach.
Off-Gassing
9.5
/ 10
“Fresh out of the box, there was barely any smell from this mattress. It was better than almost any other bed I’ve tested.” – Colin
Our testing team reported very little “new mattress smell” from the Avocado Extra Firm. While the latex may have a slight odor at first, we found that the smell was non-offensive and quick to fade away.
The Avocado Extra Firm is made with natural materials that don’t give off the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are found with synthetic foams. We found that this made a huge difference in terms of off-gassing. Even if VOCs from other mattresses don’t pose any health risk, our testers liked that the Avocado Extra Firm was nearly free of odors.
The Avocado Extra Firm Mattress is 10.5 inches tall and has a firmness level of 8 out of 10 on our firmness scale. The mattress is intended to have a firm feel, and all the materials reflect Avocado’s commitment to eco-conscious design.
The cover of the Avocado Extra Firm is made with organic cotton that is certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), a program that audits and verifies the production of organic materials.
The cotton is blended with 3% elastane, giving it added stretch to complement the cotton’s softness. Four handles are stitched into the sides of the cover to make it easier to move the mattress.
Beneath the cover is a thin layer of organic wool that enhances breathability and works as a natural fire barrier. This allows Avocado to avoid using the chemical fire barriers that are found in many mattresses.
Under the wool is a thick layer of latex that is certified according to the criteria of the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS). This material is firm and bouncy, providing only minimal cradling of the body. The latex is produced with the Dunlop process, making it dense and durable.
The support core of the Avocado Extra Firm is made with three layers that all work together as a stable base for the mattress. The top and bottom layers are each 3 inches thick and made with pocketed innerspring coils. Between them is a .5-inch layer made from a blend of organic latex and organic coconut fiber.
The pocketed coils provide additional firmness and responsiveness. They are also zoned to offer more support under heavier areas of the body, contributing to the firmer feel of this mattress.
Avocado lists a host of certifications that this mattress and its other products have received, including Formaldehyde-Free Claim Verified, MADE SAFE certified, and OEKO-TEX 100 and GREENGUARD Gold certified for low chemical emissions.

A list of stores is available on the Avocado website.
Shipping
The Avocado Extra Firm ships for free to customers in the 48 contiguous U.S. states. Shipping is available to Alaska and Hawaii for an additional charge that is shown at checkout.
For standard shipping, the mattress is rolled up tightly and sealed in plastic packaging before being placed in a reinforced cardboard box. That box gets delivered to your front door.
The mattress is heavy, especially in larger sizes, so it helps to have at least two people to move the box into your home. Then you bring the box to your bedroom, remove the packaging, and allow the mattress to return to its full size.
Additional Services
For an additional fee, Avocado offers a White Glove delivery service for setup of the Avocado Extra Firm Mattress. You can also include old mattress removal with this service.
Sleep Trial
Avocado offers a 1-year sleep trial for the Avocado Extra Firm Mattress. You must keep the mattress for 30 days before requesting a return, and the company also requires that you use a mattress protector during the trial period.
If you aren’t satisfied with your purchase, you can request a return, and Avocado will pick the mattress up from your home. You will be issued a refund of the purchase price minus a $99 return shipping fee. Charges for White Glove delivery are non-refundable.
Warranty
The warranty for the Avocado Extra Firm lasts for 25 years. It covers uncommon manufacturing defects, but it will not cover accidental damage, negligence, or standard wear and tear.
This warranty offers prorated coverage. For the first 10 years of the warranty, you have full coverage, which means the company will repair or replace a defective mattress at no charge to you. Starting in year 11, warranty service includes a charge of 50% of the original purchase price. The charge then increases by 5% each year until it reaches 95% of the original price.
