Full Beautyrest Mattress ReviewSleep Number and Beautyrest are best known for high-end mattresses. Both brands have strong name recognition in the mattress industry, and shoppers often compare them when looking for a luxury mattress made in the U.S. Sleep Number was founded as Select Comfort in 1987, while Beautyrest was created by Simmons Bedding Co. in the 1920s.
The Sleep Number ComfortNext Lux is an adjustable mattress, while the Beautyrest Black Hybrid Series Three XCS is a hybrid model. These mattresses carry comparable price tags, but their designs are distinct from one another and each model will appeal to different types of sleepers.
We conducted hands-on testing of both beds in our Seattle-based Test Lab. Find out how these mattresses performed, and which model may be the best mattress for you given your preferred sleep position, body weight, and other factors that impact sleep.

Our Testing Team’s Take
Our team has hand-tested more than 2,000 mattresses, evaluating each one using our custom testing methodology. We use a wide range of tools and technology in our Seattle Test Lab to measure how each mattress performs in terms of motion isolation, temperature regulation, pressure relief, and other important criteria for sleepers. These objective results inform our ratings, as do the personal opinions of our testing team members and verified customers who own the beds.
We also understand the importance of testing out mattresses in real-world environments. Once our lab tests have concluded, our field testers take the mattresses home and sleep on them for a week or two. Our testing team consists of people with varying body types and sleep position preferences, so our results are inclusive of a wide range of sleeper types. Find out how the Sleep Number ComfortNext Lux and the Beautyrest Black Hybrid Series Three XCS stacked up in our testing.
Our Verdict
The Sleep Number ComfortNext Lux and Beautyrest Black Hybrid Series Three XCS mattresses sell at nearly identical price-points, and come with similar sleep trials and warranties. The Beautyrest model is a bit thicker and heavier, but each purchase includes free White Glove Delivery. Whether a sleeper prefers one bed over the other largely depends on factors like body weight and sleep position preference.

Back pain
“On the Sleep Number ComfortNext Lux, I could definitely feel the effects of the foam comfort layer and adjustable air chambers. The contouring was great when I was on my side, but it was a little too cushy when lying on my back or stomach.”
The Sleep Number ComfortNext Lux is adjustable, so firmness can range from soft (3) to firm (8), and it offers high-tech features like automatic sleep tracking. In contrast, the Beautyrest Black Hybrid Series Three XCS is a traditional hybrid that comes in medium (5), medium firm (6), and firm (7) designs. Couples with differing sleep needs may prefer the ComfortNext Lux for the ability to adjust how firm the bed feels on each side. Others would rather not bother with extra technology and sleep on a more straightforward bed, like the Beautyrest Hybrid Series Three XCS.
Side sleepers and lighter weight back and stomach sleepers can find comfort on both beds, but back and stomach sleepers weighing over 230 pounds may prefer the Black Hybrid Series Three XCS. In our testing, the firm (7) model received the highest ratings from this group because they didn’t find themselves sinking into the mattress as deeply.

“I really enjoyed trying out the Plush model of the Series Three XCS. It relieved my pressure well and I never noticed motion transfer from the other side of the bed.”

Sleep Number ComfortNext Lux Breakdown
Firmness on the Sleep Number ComfortNext Lux is adjustable, and it can vary from soft (3) to firm (8) on our firmness scale.
The cover on this mattress is made from soft-to-the-touch polyester. Below the cover is the comfort system, which consists of a 3.5-inch polyfoam layer. This layer relieves pressure and lightly conforms to the body.
Below the comfort system is the bed’s transition layer, which is 3 inches of zoned polyfoam with a micro coil inset. The micro coils provide space for airflow that helps regulate temperature. They also add both comfort and support to the mattress, with a slightly bouncy feel.
The support core in the ComfortNext Lux consists of air chambers. These can be adjusted through the Sleep Number App. The firmness of the bed increases as air is added to the chambers and decreases as air is let out. Dual controls mean each side of the bed can be set to a different firmness level.
The ComfortNext Lux also has sensors built into the mattress that automatically monitor sleep. You can view your sleep data in the Sleep Number App, including a nightly sleep score and details like heart rate and breathing rate.
Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-ProAdapt Hybrid Breakdown
This mattress comes in medium (5), medium firm (6), and firm (7) options. Like the ComfortNext Lux, the Beautyrest Black Hybrid Series Three XCS has a polyester cover.
Beneath the cover, the comfort system contains four components. A foam layer infused with phase change material promotes cooling by absorbing body heat from the surface. One layer of polyfoam and two memory foam layers contour to the body, providing pressure relief. Both memory foam layers are aerated to prevent heat buildup.
Two polyfoam transitional layers provide a mixture of cushioning and pushback, preventing sleepers from sinking too deeply. The support core is made up of triple-strand pocketed coils, which have a reinforced perimeter for stronger edge support. A layer of base foam below the coils helps keep everything in place.
Mattress Sizing and Weight
Both beds are available in twin XL, queen, king, California king, and split head king sizes. The Sleep Number ComfortNext Lux also comes in full, split king, split head California king, and split California king sizes, while the Beautyrest Black Hybrid Series Three XCS also comes in a split head queen size. Split mattresses consist of two pieces, while split head mattresses feature a separation at the top that allow both people to independently elevate their side of the bed.
The mattresses share similar profiles, though the Beautyrest is a bit thicker. It also weighs more, which is important to consider if you plan on moving it yourself.
| Mattress Model | Profile | Weight |

| Beautyrest Black Hybrid Series Three XCS | 14.5″ | 161 lbs. |
Performance Ratings
Each sleeper has their own set of preferences when it comes to a mattress. People who experience pain or discomfort may seek out pressure relief, those who sleep hot may want a cooling mattress, and couples tend to prefer mattresses that absorb motion and don’t make much noise. Here’s how these mattresses compared across these categories and more in our testing.
Mattress Pricing
The Sleep Number ComfortNext Lux and the Beautyrest Black Hybrid Series Three XCS mattresses both fall on the high end of the price spectrum. These prices stem from the quality of materials and brand prestige. Hybrids generally sell for more than all-foam models due to the cost of coils, and adjustable mattresses with air chambers tend to be more expensive than all other mattress types.
Although these beds cost more than average, they are considered mid-range within each brand’s mattress lineup. People seeking the most luxurious mattresses available may consider upgrading to the Sleep Number ClimateCool or Climate360, or the Beautyrest Black Hybrid Series Four or Series Five XCS. These models are more complex and include more cooling elements.
