Full Tempur-Pedic Mattress Review

Sleep Number and Tempur-Pedic are U.S.-based brands known for luxury mattresses that incorporate cutting edge technology and materials. Sleep Number beds offer adjustable firmness, while Tempur-Pedic models feature proprietary TEMPUR memory foam.

The Sleep Number ComfortNext Lux is an adjustable mattress, and the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-ProAdapt is a memory foam hybrid. Shoppers looking for a luxury mattress often compare the two because both fall on the high end of the price spectrum, but there are differences between these models in terms of materials, construction, policies, and performance.

We brought both mattresses into our Seattle-based Test Lab to see how well they work for a variety of sleepers. Learn how they stack up, and which model may be the best mattress for your individual needs.

Our Testing Team’s Take

In our Test Lab, our team has evaluated more than 2,000 mattresses using a custom product testing methodology that we have developed over time. This approach allows us to measure specifics, like how much body heat a mattress retains, where pressure builds up beneath a sleeper’s body, and how much movement travels across the bed’s surface. In addition to an overall score, we give mattresses ratings in each of these different categories.

After our lab testing has concluded, each mattress is sent home with a member of our field testing team, allowing us to see how the beds perform in real-world settings. Lab and field tester ratings help us gauge which sleep positions and body weights are most compatible with a given mattress. Find out how these Sleep Number and Tempur-Pedic beds compare during our testing.

The Sleep Number ComfortNext Lux and the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-ProAdapt Hybrid mattresses are comparable in terms of price, but the ComfortNext Lux is a bit more expensive. These beds also have similar profiles, but their materials and construction are different. The ComfortNext Lux is an adjustable mattress with a firmness level that can range from 3 to 8, while the TEMPUR-ProAdapt Hybrid is a foam-on-coil hybrid model with a medium (5) feel.

Insomnia

“The TEMPUR-ProAdapt Hybrid is one of the more comfortable mattresses I’ve tested. It lightly hugged my body, while providing the support I need as a side sleeper. I didn’t feel a single pressure point develop.”

There is no clear “winner” when comparing the ComfortNext Lux and TEMPUR-ProAdapt Hybrid. While they share some similarities, these beds appeal to different groups of people. Dual firmness options and automatic sleep tracking make the ComfortNext Lux good for couples who require different firmness levels and people who want insights into how well they sleep. TEMPUR foam with a coil base makes the TEMPUR-ProAdapt Hybrid work well for those who want the hug of memory foam combined with the responsiveness of coils.

Both mattresses feature foam comfort and transitional layers, which means they excel at relieving pressure and isolating motion. These beds also rate the highest among side sleepers, so people in this group can generally find comfort on either bed regardless of their body weight. Back and stomach sleepers tend to prefer the ComfortNext Lux because of its adjustable firmness. However, even with that option, most stomach sleepers weighing 130 pounds or more will want to skip both of these models and seek out a firmer mattress altogether.

Back pain

“On the Sleep Number ComfortNext Lux, I could definitely feel the effect of the foam comfort layer. The contouring was great when I was on my side, but it was a little much when lying on my back or stomach.”

Sleep Number ComfortNext Lux Breakdown

The Sleep Number ComfortNext Lux has an adjustable firmness range that falls between soft (3) and firm (8) on our firmness scale.

The bed’s cover is made of polyester and designed to feel soft to the touch. Beneath the cover sits a 3.5-inch layer of pressure-relieving polyfoam. An additional polyfoam layer is zoned and inset with minicoils. This transitional layer provides denser padding between the softer comfort layer and the support core. The microcoils in this transition layer also allow for cooling airflow that can help prevent heat from building up on the surface.

The ComfortNext Lux’s support core is made up of adjustable air chambers. Sleepers can set the desired firmness level for each side of the bed using the Sleep Number App or an optional remote that can be purchased for a fee. In addition to allowing for different firmness levels, the mattress monitors your sleep activity using built-in sensors. You can view tracking data like heart rate, breathing rate, and a nightly sleep score on the Sleep Number companion app.

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-ProAdapt Hybrid Breakdown

The Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-ProAdapt Hybrid measures medium (5) on our firmness scale. It’s covered with a fabric that can be unzipped, removed, and washed.

Beneath the mattress cover sits the comfort system, which contains a 2-inch layer of memory foam. This proprietary TEMPUR foam is designed to relieve pressure and absorb motion. It has also been aerated with large holes to promote airflow and prevent body heat buildup.

Below the top layer sits another 2 inches of TEMPUR memory foam, which provides transitional support and prevents sleepers from sinking too deeply into the mattress.

The TEMPUR-ProAdapt’s Hybrid’s support core consists of pocketed coils. In addition to providing support, the coils add a responsive feel to the mattress while promoting steady air circulation.

Performance Ratings

Each sleeper has their own set of mattress features they consider most important. People who experience chronic pain often seek out pressure-relieving beds, while those who tend to become hot and sweaty at night prioritize cooling features. Couples who share a bed may look for mattresses that absorb motion, so one sleeper doesn’t disrupt the other when getting in or out of bed at night. Here’s how the ComfortNext Lux and TEMPUR-ProAdapt Hybrid performed across each feature in our testing.

Mattress Pricing

The Sleep Number ComfortNext Lux and Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-ProAdapt Hybrid are both considered high-end mattresses, because their prices for a queen size bed fall above $3,000. These prices reflect both the brands’ reputations, as well as the materials and construction of each model. Hybrid mattresses like the TEMPUR-ProAdapt Hybrid tend to cost more than all-foam models, and adjustable mattresses like the Sleep Number usually carry higher price tags than most other mattress types, including hybrids.

While these mattress models are on the high end overall, they are the mid-range options for each brand. Shoppers looking for the most luxurious options available may want to consider the more expensive Sleep Number ClimateCool or Climate360, or the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Breeze or TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze models. These mattresses carry higher prices because of their additional features, including advanced cooling technology.

What Customers Are Saying

Customers praise both the Sleep Number ComfortNext Lux and the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-ProAdapt Hybrid for their ability to contour to the body and relieve pressure. People also note that both beds isolate motion well, so one bed partner’s movements during the night do not disturb the other.

Sleepers who own the ComfortNext Lux enjoy its customizability, which allows for a different firmness level on each side, and note that it’s an excellent bed for couples. Those who have the TEMPUR-ProAdapt Hybrid say it is easier to move on than other memory foam hybrids.

Some shoppers have voiced complaints about these mattresses. The most common issue that both beds receive is that they retain too much heat and are not comfortable for people who run warm in bed. Reviewers also complain that finding the ideal firmness level on the ComfortNext Lux can take an extended period of trial and error, and that the TEMPUR-ProAdapt Hybrid isn’t as durable as expected.
