Founded in 1931, Serta has a long history in the mattress industry. While a lot has changed since its early days, Serta continues to focus on providing a diverse array of mattresses for consumers and hotels alike, including well-known models like the Serta Perfect Sleeper. The Serta Classic, also known as the Serta Classic Standard, is a hybrid mattress at an entry-level price-point.
Like the Perfect Sleeper, the Serta Classic uses a hybrid design, incorporates zoning, and comes in three firmness options. The Serta Classic’s feel options include Plush Euro Top, Medium, and Firm, which equate to medium (5), medium firm (6), and firm (7) based on our firmness ratings. The Plush Euro Top is also known as the Dorian Plush Euro Top, and the Firm may be referred to as the Dorian Firm. The Medium can also be called the Alden Medium, and has a slightly lower profile and price tag than the other firmness options.
This mattress review will analyze the Serta Classic in depth to help you decide if this is the best mattress for you. We’ll go over our team’s opinions, how the bed performed in our in-house testing, its overall construction, and what to expect from the company’s policies.

Testing Team Takeaways
To test the Serta Classic Mattress, we had three people on our testing team each take the bed home with them for one week. Here are their initial observations.

“Given its features, three firmness options, and free White Glove delivery, the Serta Classic seems like a strong value for the money.”

“Of the three firmness options, I’d personally pick the firm every time. I didn’t feel like my hips sank in too deeply. My partner would probably prefer more motion isolation, but the firm model’s support level is right up my alley.”

“I was comfortable sleeping on my side on all three firmness options of the Serta Classic. The firm version felt the coolest, but I also appreciated the softer options’ enhanced pressure relief and motion isolation.”
Sleeping Style and Body Weight
Side Sleepers
Most side sleepers will be able to find a firmness option for the Serta Classic that gives them the necessary conforming and support. This model uses a comfort system that combines two layers of polyfoam, including a top layer of convoluted polyfoam, giving ample cushioning to a side sleeper’s curves. Zoned support around the midsection can also help prevent a side sleeper’s hips from sagging in too deeply, which may make it easier to maintain good sleep posture.
While all of our side-sleeping testers found some version of the Serta Classic comfortable, their preferences varied by body type. Team members under 130 pounds much preferred the medium (5) and medium firm (6) options for their more significant pressure relief. Side sleepers over 230 pounds benefited from the extra support of the firm (7). Those between 130 and 230 pounds noted balanced support and cradling across all three firmness options without a strong preference between them.
Back Sleepers
Many back sleepers will appreciate the Serta Classic, especially its zoned support. The center of the bed is sturdier to help limit the excessive hip sinkage that back sleepers frequently experience. When a back sleeper’s hips sink in more deeply than the rest of their body, it can cause lumbar strain, so many back sleepers prefer zoning like the Serta Classic’s. At the same time, two layers of polyfoam in the comfort system give the mattress a subtle plushness.
In our tests, back sleepers across weight groups generally preferred the medium firm (6) and firm (7) options, noting that these firmness levels kept their spines on a more even plane.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers typically need a firmer surface than their side- or back-sleeping counterparts, so the firmer versions of the Serta Classic should fit the bill. Those who sleep on their stomachs often experience lower back pain when their midsections dip into the mattress and pull their spines out of alignment. The Serta Classic’s zoning helps reinforce this critical region of the bed, while the polyfoam comfort system gently cushions the front of a stomach sleeper’s body.
Testers of all weights preferred the medium firm (6) and firm (7) versions of the bed because their stomachs didn’t sink in as deeply. Sleepers under 230 pounds enjoyed both these firmness options equally, with personal preferences varying depending on whether they favored plushness or support. Those over 230 pounds favored the firm (7) option’s more stable support.
Mattress Performance
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Check out our guide on everything you need to know about mattress construction here. While the designs may vary slightly, they share a similar basic construction. The cover uses polyester designed to let air circulate into and out of the mattress. Next, two layers of polyfoam add cushioning and contouring to reduce pressure buildup. The first layer of polyfoam is also convoluted for a plusher feel and added airflow.
Finally, the mattress core uses pocketed coils arranged in three firmness zones with extra support around the center of the bed to help promote good sleep posture.
