Our team at Sleep Foundation conducts extensive hands-on tests for each mattress to provide you with the most reliable, data-driven recommendations and reviews. Below are key guidelines that inform our testing methodology:
Our testers lie on the surface of each mattress to evaluate factors such as contouring and support. We also use specialized tools to measure performance criteria like pressure relief, heat retention, and motion isolation.
We test each mattress using various sleep positions to observe whether a mattress is better suited for side, back, or stomach sleeping. We roll around the surface and sit on the edges to gauge ease of movement and perimeter support.
We have tested hundreds of mattresses and bring years of experience in the mattress industry to the test lab. Our testing team covers a wide range of sleep preferences, sleep positions, and body types. This helps us represent as many sleeper types as possible in our reviews.

Testing Team Takeaways
To test the DreamCloud Ultra Hybrid Mattress, we had three people on our testing team each take the bed home with them for one week. Here are their initial observations.

The pressure relief was outstanding! The DreamCloud Ultra really cradles the body, which, as a side sleeper, felt great around my shoulders and hips.

I’m a side sleeper like Logan, but for me, the DreamCloud Ultra was just a bit too soft. It cushioned my hips and shoulders, but I felt myself sinking into the bed more than I’d like.

I can’t deny what Logan said about pressure relief — it’s really impressive. But for me there was a drawback. The deep contouring of the memory foam made it hard for me to move on the mattress and adjust my sleeping position.

Side Sleepers
Our testing found that the DreamCloud Ultra works well for most side sleepers who weigh up to 230 pounds. The mattress got especially strong ratings from side sleepers under 130 pounds.
Our testers were almost uniformly impressed by the DreamCloud Ultra’s ability to contour to the hips and shoulders, which are the main pressure points when sleeping on your side. However, some testers felt that the mattress was too soft, leading them to sink too far into the bed. This opinion was most common among side sleepers over 230 pounds.
Back Sleepers
In our testing, the DreamCloud Ultra proved to be a comfortable and supportive mattress for back sleepers under 130 pounds. They spoke highly of the gentle contouring around their hips and lower back, which eased strain in the lumbar spine. These sleepers gave slightly higher ratings to the hybrid model thanks to its sturdy and bouncy coils.
In contrast, back sleepers over 230 pounds said that this mattress was too plush, so their midsection pushed down into the mattress and disrupted their spinal alignment.
Back sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds received adequate support from the DreamCloud Ultra, but most said that their preference was for a mattress with a slightly firmer feel.
Stomach Sleepers
With its medium (5) firmness, the DreamCloud Ultra is not the ideal mattress for most stomach sleepers.
When lying on your stomach, spinal alignment can be thrown off if your abdomen sags down into the mattress. For that reason, a firmer bed usually works better to keep stomach sleepers in a flat and neutral position.
In our tests, stomach sleepers under 130 pounds got adequate support from the DreamCloud Ultra. However, stomach sleepers with a higher body weight experienced too much sinkage to give the mattress high ratings.
Performance Ratings
In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.
Motion Isolation
9.5
/ 10
DreamCloud Ultra Memory Foam:9.5 / 10
DreamCloud Ultra Hybrid:9 / 10
“The DreamCloud Ultra offers outstanding motion isolation, especially on the all-foam model. The thick memory foam layer absorbed virtually all vibrations from movement on both sides of the bed.” – Brad
Our testing team raved about how well the DreamCould Ultra isolated motion. High-end motion isolation is a characteristic of memory foam, which is featured in the top layer of the mattress.
In our tests, sleepers barely noticed when someone was tossing and turning on the other side of the bed. That makes the DreamCloud Ultra a strong option for couples and people who are easily awakened by a partner’s movement during the night.
Because it has less bounce, we found that the Ultra Memory Foam was better at motion isolation than the Ultra Hybrid. However, both models scored very well in this category.
Pressure Relief
9.5
/ 10
DreamCloud Ultra Memory Foam:9.5 / 10
DreamCloud Ultra Hybrid:9 / 10
“Pressure relief is one of the DreamCloud Ultra’s signature attributes. The foam comfort layers do an excellent job of cushioning and contouring.” – Logan
All of our testers recognized the ability of the DreamCloud Ultra to adapt to the body thanks to its layers of memory foam and zoned polyfoam. These materials give the mattress a hug-like sensation that can minimize tension around sharp pressure points.
However, not all sleepers loved this level of contouring. In our testing, people over 230 pounds tended to experience excess sinkage into the foams. For them, the mattress relieved pressure but ultimately lacked support.
For that reason, the pressure relieving qualities of the DreamCloud Hybrid are best for side sleepers up to 230 pounds and back and stomach sleepers under 130 pounds.
Temperature Control
7
/ 10
“The DreamCloud Ultra has some extra cooling features, but I still felt some moderate warmth building up during the night.” – Mary
During our temperature control testing, we detected some heat retention in the top layers of the DreamCloud Ultra. Our individual testers also noted some heat buildup, although most said that it was mild and didn’t disrupt their sleep.
The cover and top layer of the DreamCloud Ultra include materials designed to help the mattress maintain a balanced temperature. However, memory foam has a tendency to trap heat as it conforms to the body.
In the end, we found these factors largely balanced themselves out. For most sleepers, the DreamCloud Ultra is cool enough, but it may not be the perfect fit for hot sleepers.
Edge Support
6.5
/ 10
DreamCloud Ultra Memory Foam:6.5 / 10
DreamCloud Ultra Hybrid:7 / 10
“Of the two models, I found the Ultra Hybrid to be more stable around the perimeter. There was quite a bit more sinkage near the edge of the all-foam model.” – Logan
A common issue with memory foam is its weakness around the perimeter, and our testers noticed this issue on the DreamCloud Ultra.
With its reinforced coil support core, the Ultra Hybrid had a sturdier perimeter that was better suited to sitting on the edge of the bed. The Ultra Memory Foam model was less supportive along the edges, but most of our testers didn’t feel like they were going to roll off the mattress.
The conclusion of our testing was that edge support isn’t a strength of the DreamCloud Ultra, but the mattress has enough perimeter stability for most people. It may lack edge support for people over 230 pounds or those with limited physical mobility.
Ease of Movement
6
/ 10
DreamCloud Ultra Memory Foam:6 / 10
DreamCloud Ultra Hybrid:6.5 / 10
“At times, the deep contouring of the foam caused me to feel stuck in the mattress, requiring more effort to turn over in bed.” – Brad
While conforming foam offers the benefit of pressure relief, it frequently comes with the downside of restricting movement in bed. Our testing team found that to be true with the DreamCloud Ultra, particularly the all-foam model.
As memory foam hugs the body, an impression is formed in the foam. When you want to move, you sometimes have to push against that impression especially if you have a higher body weight.
The Ultra Hybrid has some bounciness from the coils that improves ease of movement, but even on that model, adjusting your body’s position requires some effort. That can be an issue for combination sleepers who want to be able to easily switch between positions during the night.
Off-Gassing
6
/ 10
“There was an undeniable foam smell when I cut the plastic away from the mattress. It didn’t last too long, but it was very noticeable.” – Mary
The testers on our team reported a significant “new mattress smell” after unboxing the DreamCloud Ultra. This odor is typical for mattresses with thick foam layers.
The smell results from the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are leftover from the foam manufacturing process. The VOCs aren’t a health risk, but they can cause an odor that slowly fades over a few days.
The DreamCloud Ultra Mattress is 15 inches tall and has a firmness level of medium, or a 5 out of 10 on our firmness scale. DreamCloud offers this mattress in two different models, the Ultra Memory Foam and the Ultra Hybrid.
Both models feature the same cover and comfort system. The soft CloudQuilt+ cover includes specialty fibers intended to reduce heat buildup.
Two layers are quilted into the cover to form a Euro-style pillow-top. The first is a phase change material engineered for temperature neutrality, and the second is memory foam. Memory foam creates a cradling effect that cushions the body and minimizes impact around key pressure points. The phase change material sits above the foam to counteract heat retention.
Beneath the memory foam is a layer of polyfoam that is divided into five zones in order to give added support beneath heavier areas like the midsection and shoulders. While these upper layers are the same in the Ultra Memory Foam and the Ultra Hybrid, the two models have different materials in their support cores.
In the Ultra Memory Foam, the support core is a layer of high-density polyfoam. In the Ultra Hybrid, there’s an 8-inch layer of pocketed innerspring coils resting on a thin layer of polyfoam. The coils are zoned for added midsection support and are also reinforced around the perimeter. The layer of polyfoam under the coils is designed for stability and noise absorption.
