We know how important sleep is, so we take our mattress reviews seriously. Every mattress we review undergoes thorough performance testing in our Seattle-based Test Lab, where we use pressure mapping, heating elements, weights, and other industry-standard tools and tech. For mattresses geared toward sleepers over 230 pounds, we pay special attention to factors like support and perimeter strength. 

To test how each mattress performs in a real-life setting, field testers take each mattress home for a few weeks. Our in-house and field teams consist of testers with different body types and preferred sleeping positions. To get relevant feedback for this comparison guide, we primarily called on testers over 230 pounds during the home testing phase.

Our Verdict  

The Titan Plus Luxe and the Big Fig Classic are both hybrid mattresses with layers of pressure-relieving polyfoam over a support core of steel pocketed coils. The Big Fig additionally uses latex in the comfort system for more bounce.

Side sleepers and those who sleep with a lightweight partner are likely to lean toward the Titan Plus Luxe, which does a better job of accommodating sensitive body parts thanks to its softer and more adaptive surface. However, this mattress may feel too soft for some stomach sleepers over 230 pounds. Meanwhile, the Big Fig Classic performs exceptionally well for back and stomach sleepers in all weight groups, but scored lower for side sleepers who weigh 230 pounds or less.

Thanks to its latex layer and firmer surface, our testers had an easier time changing positions on the Big Fig Classic. They also found the Big Fig stayed cooler throughout the night, although hot sleepers can always opt for the extra GlacioTex cooling cover on the Titan Plus Luxe.

On the other hand, the Titan Plus Luxe was the clear winner for pressure relief. Most beds for heavier individuals feel extra firm in order to provide support. The Titan Plus Luxe is plusher than average with extra cushioning to alleviate pressure points, though it’s also designed to prevent you from sinking too far into the bed.

Both beds also feature solid edge support, which is a category that is particularly relevant for people who weigh over 230 pounds. This strong performance is thanks to the sturdy coils and, in the case of the Big Fig, a polyfoam encasement to reinforce the perimeter. The drawback of the coils is that both mattresses are prone to some motion transfer, although neither is as disruptive for couples compared to a traditional innerspring bed.

These mattresses have comparable price-points and shipping, return, and warranty policies. However, the Big Fig doesn’t ship to Alaska or Hawaii, while the Titan Plus Luxe can’t be ordered with White Glove delivery.

Construction and Details

Both mattresses are hybrids and have a similar profile. However, differences in materials, design, and firmness give each mattress a unique feel.

Titan Plus Luxe Breakdown

The Titan Plus Luxe is a 13-inch hybrid model with layers of supportive foams over a pocketed coil base. The bed has a woven knit cover to stimulate airflow, with an optional upgrade to a GlacioTex cooling cover for extra breathability.

In total, the comfort system is 4 inches thick. First, there is a 1-inch layer of gel foam quilted into the mattress cover. The gel infusion is designed to draw heat away from the mattress surface and help you sleep cooler. This is followed by 2 inches of comfort foam, which is engineered to strike a balance between responsiveness and cushioning. A dense layer of transitional polyfoam rounds out the comfort system.

The support core features 8-inch pocketed steel coils over a high-density polyfoam base.

The Titan Plus Luxe is designed to support a total weight of 1,000 pounds. Unlike most mattresses designed for sleepers over 230 pounds, this mattress has a relatively plush feel, falling at a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale, or medium firm.

Big Fig Classic

The Big Fig Classic blends layers of latex, polyfoam, and pocketed coils to form a supportive sleep surface for people weighing up to 600 pounds on each side. The mattress stands 12.5 inches thick.

It starts with a quilted top featuring Thermogel cooling technology, followed by a layer of latex with gel infusions and perforations to promote breathability. Together, these two layers provide some initial softness and bounce.

Three polyfoam layers make up the rest of the comfort system. All three layers are quite dense and comparable to the support foam you’d find in other mattresses, and this helps the Big Fig Classic resist deep sinkage.

The support core contains sturdy, 15-gauge pocketed steel coils. These are encased in a high-density polyfoam shell that extends around the perimeter and strengthens the edges, reducing compression when you get in and out of bed.

The Big Fig Classic has a firm feel, equivalent to a 7 on our firmness scale. This makes it slightly firmer than the Titan Plus Luxe, though still softer than many competing models for plus-size sleepers. It is designed to support up to 1,200 pounds total.

Mattress Sizing and Weight 

Measuring 13 inches and 12.5 inches, respectively, these mattresses fall within the average height profile for hybrid models. They’re a little thicker than most foam mattresses, so double-check your fitted sheet measurements to confirm if they’ll fit.

Brooklyn Bedding offers more nonstandard size options for the Titan Plus Luxe, including short queen, split California king, and RV king. The Big Fig Classic comes in split king as well as the standard six mattress sizes.

Since they’re made using thick-gauge steel and high-density foams, these mattresses are on the heavier side. Both models are vacuum-sealed for shipping and designed to expand once the plastic wrap is removed, but you might want to ask a friend or household member for assistance in carrying the mattress to your room and setting it up on your bed frame.

Prices for the Big Fig Classic and the Titan Plus Luxe are higher than average, which is understandable given their hybrid designs. The Titan Plus Luxe currently costs a bit less than the Big Fig Classic, but keep an eye out for discounts from both companies, which can swing the prices.

Brooklyn Bedding and Big Fig stand by their mattresses with 120-night sleep trials and limited lifetime warranties. Both companies also offer free shipping to the contiguous U.S. 

The Titan Plus can also be shipped to Alaska and Hawaii for an extra fee, while shipping for Big Fig is limited to the contiguous U.S. However, Big Fig offers optional White Glove delivery and old mattress removal, which are not available for the Titan Plus.

Big Fig customers say the bed seems well built and provides solid support with little to no dipping. Several people who have had the bed for 6 to 7 years say it holds up great and doesn’t sag, making it worth the investment. The old mattress removal service is efficient.

Reviewers also praise the quiet build, strong motion isolation, and outstanding edge support, reporting that the edges easily support sitting or sleeping on the edge. Most people say the bed sleeps cool, although some would have preferred more active cooling technology. The bed is quite firm. While most reviewers enjoy this, some say they would have liked more cushioning. 

The majority of reviewers find the Titan Plus Luxe strikes a nice balance between plushness and support, making this a good option for couples with varying needs. Sleepers stay mostly “on” rather than “in” the bed, with a little bounce that helps facilitate movement. However, there are some complaints about weak edge support, and a few reviewers write that the cooling features aren’t super effective.

Reports on the mattress longevity are mixed.
