Finding Your Favorite Sheets

Searching for the perfect set of bed sheets can feel intimidating. With dozens of materials, hundreds of manufacturers, and thousands of models, finding the right sheets for you can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. Through intensive research and hands-on testing, we have identified the best sheets available.

Below is a growing list of our comprehensive sheet reviews. Under that, we describe some of the different types of sheets on the market

Sheet Materials

Each material used to produce sheets offers a distinct feel and texture that some sleepers will find more appealing than others. These range from crisp linen and lightweight cotton to luxuriously soft materials like silk and rayon from bamboo. Understanding the differences between these textiles can help you find the right bedding set.

Linen Sheets

Derived from the flax plant, linen is characterized by exceptional breathability and an initially coarse feel that becomes softer over time. Linen bedding offers year-round cooling, making it suitable for hot sleepers and people who reside in warm climates. The material is also highly durable and should hold up well over time.

Some of the finest materials used today include long-staple varieties of cotton such as Egyptian and Supima, linen, silk, and textiles derived from botanical sources like bamboo and eucalyptus. You may pay more for these sheets, but for many sleepers, their impeccable construction and long-lasting comfort will be worth the investment.

Feel

Some people prefer crisp, lightweight bedding, while others enjoy silky-soft sheets that drape closely to the body. Material composition, weave, and weight all play a role in how your sheets will feel. These factors will also affect breathability, durability, ease of care, and other important variables for owners.

Cooling Sheets

Cooling sheets are typically lightweight and crisp, and some are made from materials that wick away moisture from the body to keep you cool at night. Some of the most popular cooling materials include Egyptian and Supima cotton, linen, Tencel lyocell, and rayon derived from bamboo.

Price

The price of a new bedding set depends on the size, material composition, and quality of construction, as well as the brand itself. Shoppers on a budget should have little trouble finding a sheet collection that won’t stretch their spending limits. The same is true for those who would rather spend more on a luxury set.

Sheet Materials

One of the biggest considerations to keep in mind when purchasing sheets is the material that you want. The material of a set of sheets will have a substantial effect on how soft they feel, how warm or cool they are, and how they perform. Beyond that, material choice also affects the care requirements, durability, and cost.

Cotton
Cotton is one of the most popular materials used in sheets. It offers good breathability, above-average durability, and easy care requirements. Cotton sheets are available in every category from ultra-budget to luxury.

Egyptian Cotton
Egyptian cotton is a luxurious material that is sourced from Egyptian-grown cotton. It is considered an extra-long staple cotton, meaning that each fiber is exceptionally long. The material is known for its superior breathability, softness, and durability.

Linen
Linen is a popular bedding material manufactured from flax fibers. Linen sheets are prized for their superior performance in warm climates, thanks to good breathability and natural moisture-wicking properties. Linen offers above-average durability, and is also considered more environmentally-friendly than many competing materials.

Flannel
Flannel is a soft, warm, and cozy material that is most commonly used in the cold winter months. It can be made from cotton, wool, or even polyester. It is made using a unique manufacturing process that brushes the fibers after the weaving process, creating the signature fuzzy feel that flannel is known for.

Microfiber
Microfiber is a synthetic material that’s commonly used in athletic clothing and bedding. It’s made using ultra-thin synthetic fibers, giving it a silky-smooth feel. Microfiber sheets are known for being very budget-friendly, while still offering good performance.

Silk
Silk is a natural material made from the cocoons of domesticated silkworms. Silk sheets are prized for their rich, soft, and luxurious feel, and they are also hypoallergenic. Because of the expensive nature of silk production, silk sheets are generally above-average in cost.

Bamboo Sheets
Bamboo sheets are made from natural bamboo fibers. Eco-friendly shoppers appreciate that bamboo is a renewable resource, while hot sleepers enjoy bamboo’s moisture-wicking performance. Bamboo sheets are moderately priced and durable, although they require more delicate care than many other materials.

Tencel
Tencel is a brand name for lyocell, a recently developed textile material derived from wood pulp. Tencel sheets are prized for being environmentally friendly, and for their soft, sleek feel. Tencel sheets typically fall into the luxury category, and are moderately priced.

Sheet Weaves

The weave refers to how the fabric is manufactured or woven. The most common weaves are percale and sateen, which both primarily refer to cotton sheets.

  • Percale: Percale refers to a type of weave, rather than a material itself. While it’s primarily made from cotton, percale sheets can also be derived from polyester or rayon. Percale sheets are known for their crisp feel, and airy, breathable performance.
  • Sateen: Like percale, sateen refers to a type of fabric weave. Sateen is made from cotton fibers which have undergone mercerization, a textile finishing treatment that gives sateen its exceptionally soft feel and silky sheen. Sateen sheets have a satin-like sheen and feel, with the durability of cotton.
