The Chilipad 2.0 actively cools or heats your sleep surface. The system consists of the Chilipad, a mesh pad that rests on top of your mattress, and the Dock external control unit that connects to the pad via tubing.
You can program the system between 55 and 115 degrees Fahrenheit, and the dual-control model can make independent adjustments on each side of the bed. Choose between a single-zone system for one sleeper, or a dual control units for two sleepers that control the temperature on each side independently.
After testing the Chilipad 2.0, our team concluded that it’s one of the most advanced mattress pads on the market in terms of active temperature control. We’ll discuss our team’s experience with the Chilipad 2.0 and explain how it works.
What Does the Chilipad 2.0 Do?
The Chilipad 2.0 is designed to actively cool or heat your sleep surface. Many cooling mattress pads provide passive temperature control, meaning they’re made from materials that either absorb heat or sleep cool in order to keep you comfortable. Active heating and cooling refers to built-in technology that allows you to make specific temperature adjustments.
The system includes three separate components:
Dock
The Dock control unit funnels water through an internal network of channels that heat or cool it to your desired temperature. The water then enters the Chilipad via a hose connector. The Chilipad 2.0 is designed for use with distilled water only.
You can rest the Dock on any flat surface underneath or next to your bed. Since the unit measures 6.5 inches tall, you may not have enough space to place it under your bed if the frame doesn’t reach this height.
Chilipad
A built-in hose connector links the Chilipad to the Dock control unit. You can place this connector at the head or foot of your bed, depending on where you decide to place the control unit.
The Chilipad is composed of polyester mesh and designed to rest on your sleep surface. Instead of a system of tubes, the cover contains a network of water channels known as the HydroLayer. Water continuously circulates through the Chilipad while you sleep, while embedded sensors are engineered to respond to temperature changes.
We found that the Chilipad 2.0 has an exceptionally slim profile and a flat, uniform feel compared with competing pads with tube-based temperature control systems. The layer is thin and breathable, so it shouldn’t affect how your mattress surface feels. It covers the entire bed while the HydroLayer zones let you personalize the temperature on each side of the bed.
The cover’s bottom layer includes a waterproof mattress protector, and the entire cover can be washed and dried in your household machines. Since the cover is very stretchy, it should hold its shape over time and conform to your mattress without shifting or adding bulk.
Chilipad App
The Chilipad 2.0 is compatible with a companion app. The app is free to download and is compatible with most current iOS and Android smart devices. You can use the app for advanced features like Sleep Scheduling, and no subscription is required.
You’ll need an active Wi-Fi network to use the app-based controls. Alternatively, you can manually adjust the Dock with on-unit controls if you prefer to keep your phone out of your bedroom.
Whether you use dual-zone or single-zone temperature controls with the Chilipad 2.0, you can customize the temperature on your side of the bed anywhere from 55 to 115 degrees. Our team experimented with a wide range of settings, and the sleep system performed as intended.
The adjustable temperature controls can also function as a noise-free alarm. Using the app, you can create a personalized sleep program with temperature settings for each night of the week. The “Warm Awake” function increases the pad’s temperature leading up to your scheduled wake-up time. You may find this more refreshing and less jarring than a traditional alarm clock or cell phone alarm.
Chilipad Remote
Every Chilipad 2.0 comes with a bedside remote. In addition to manually adjusting the controls or using the Chilipad companion app, the remote gives you a third option for personalized temperature control. You can also use remote automations like in-bed detection for automatically starting your programmed Sleep Schedule when you go to bed and powering down the pad after you get up.
Pros and Cons of the Chilipad 2.0
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
|
|
If precise temperature control is a top priority and you don’t mind paying extra for customizable heating and cooling, the Chilipad 2.0 can be a great investment. The mattress pad regulates temperature effectively without adding bulk to your sleep surface, and the control unit is compact enough to rest securely on most flat surfaces. Our team was impressed with the user-friendly controls and judged it a solid temperature-regulating product all around.
If you don’t need a specific temperature to sleep comfortably, the Chilipad 2.0 may not be ideal due to its steep price tag. Recommended regular maintenance can be time-consuming, and the control unit — while not excessively loud — may produce enough noise to disrupt sleep.
Prices and Other Considerations for the Chilipad 2.0
The Chilipad 2.0 is fairly expensive, though there are no hidden fees or subscription requirements.
| Chilipad 2.0 Size | Single Zone Price | Dual Zone Price |
|---|---|---|
| Full | $1,599 | $2,798 |
| Queen | $1,699 | $2,998 |
| King | $1,799 | $3,198 |
| California King | $1,799 | $3,198 |
In addition to cost, there are a few other factors to consider before purchasing the Chilipad 2.0.
- Dimensions: The Dock control unit measures 15 inches wide, 12 inches long, and 6.5 inches tall. It weighs about 14 pounds. The “We” versions of the queen, king, and California king Chilipad correspond to the dimensions of those standard mattress sizes. The pad is 1/8th of an inch thick.
- Reservoir water: You should only use distilled water in the Dock control unit, as tap water can carry trace amounts of sediment that may build up and clog the unit’s interior system over time.
- Cleaning: You’ll need to perform a few monthly tasks to keep your Chilipad 2.0 clean. These include draining water from the control unit and wiping the reservoir clean. You should also machine-wash the Chilipad mattress cober at least a few times per year. Detailed care instructions are available on Chilipad’s website.
- Power requirements: The Dock control unit operates on any AC supply with a voltage of 110 to 240 volts and a current of 50 to 60 hertz.
- Google connectivity: The Chilipad 2.0 can be paired with Google Home and Google Assistant if you use these platforms.
- Potential mattress damage: Some condensation can occur beneath the pad if your local climate is prone to high humidity levels. The Chilipad’s cover includes a waterproof mattress protector to help ensure minimal damage from condensation.
- Split mattresses: If you share a split adjustable bed with a sleep partner, you should opt for two “Me” Chilipads instead of one “We” pad. This allows you to enjoy a full range of motion from your bed and dual-sided temperature controls.
- Travel precautions: The Chilipad 2.0 is travel-friendly, but you should remove all water from the control unit and pad beforehand to reduce the risk of in-transit damage. Storing the system at room temperature can remove any lingering traces of moisture before you leave for your trip. Also, keep in mind you’ll need to refill the control unit with distilled water when you reach your destination, which can be hard to track down in some locations.
