Sleep Health of Students

NATIONAL SLEEP FOUNDATION — For optimal sleep health, the National Sleep Foundation recommends that children and teens sleep for the following number of hours:

  • Children ages 6-13 years old: 9-11 hours of sleep per night
  • Teenagers ages 14-17 years old: 8-10 hours of sleep per night

NSF does not advocate specific school start times. As school administrators consider school start times in their districts, they should be aware of the huge impact that sleep has on students’ academic performance, well-being and overall health.

To improve the sleep health of students, NSF urges members of Congress to ask the U.S. Department of Education to issue a comprehensive report on domestic and international school start times and their impact on student academic performance, well-being and overall health.

(Note: The U.S. Department of Education does not establish school start times, but can offer policy guidance to local school districts who do establish start times.)
