Memory foam can cause more heat buildup than other materials and may not be the best option for hot sleepers or people in warm climates.

One of the most popular mattress brands worldwide, Tempur-Pedic was the first company to take advantage of memory foam in mattresses. Today, the memory foam in their beds provides high levels of cushioning, pressure relief, and motion isolation.

Since their early days, Tempur-Pedic has constantly developed new offerings, and the TEMPUR-Cloud is another big step for the company. It is their first mattress in a box option designed to be bought online and shipped compressed to the customer’s front door.

With the rising popularity of online mattress sales, Tempur-Pedic has dipped their toes in these waters. While the company’s product line still trends toward higher-end pricing, the TEMPUR-Cloud is the most affordable option for sleepers who want a mattress made with TEMPUR memory foam.

As with any newer product, it’s natural for shoppers to wonder what to expect, and we’re here to help. Our in-depth review of the TEMPUR-Cloud covers all the details that you need to know about its construction, pricing, and performance.

Finding the optimal mattress can mean taking account of a number of different factors. Among those, two of the most important are sleeping position and body weight.

Side sleepers

In this position, there’s a tendency to place extra stress on the hips and shoulders because those are typically the widest parts of the body. If those joints press hard against a too-firm mattress, it can be painful, but if they sink too deeply into an extremely soft mattress, the spine can get thrown out of alignment. As such, side sleepers usually need a medium soft (4) to medium firm (6) mattress with mild to significant contouring. The higher a person’s body weight, generally the firmer the mattress needs to be in order to hedge against excess sinking into the comfort layers. Given these considerations, the TEMPUR-Cloud is a good match for most side sleepers, although some over 230 pounds may find it a touch too plush.

Back sleepers

Back sleepers have very different needs from side sleepers. In this position, the highest risk zone is the lumbar area of the spine. Pressure in this area can arise if the midsection pushes into the bed either too much or not enough, creating a “U” or “reverse U” shape in the back. For most back sleepers, avoiding this means using a medium (5) to firm (7) mattress with light or moderate contouring. Because of the softer feel of memory foam and its significant contouring, the TEMPUR-Cloud is best for back sleepers under 130 pounds who won’t sink into the mattress as deeply. It will likely feel too soft to back sleepers over 130 pounds.

Stomach sleepers

For stomach sleepers, the lower back is their main problem area. Like back sleepers, their lumbar spine can be uncomfortably pulled into either a U or upside-down U shape. To avoid this, they typically need a medium firm (6) to firm (8) mattress with only very light contouring. Deep sink can be especially problematic for stomach sleepers since it can feel suffocating to them when they are in a face-down position. Because of this, the TEMPUR-Cloud is not a good fit for most stomach sleepers; however, for people under 130 pounds who put minimal pressure on their mattress, it may be supportive and comfortable.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in our Test Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

9/10

TEMPURPEDIC_TEMPUR_CLOUD_MOTIONISO

A major strength of TEMPUR foam is its ability to isolate motion. This memory foam only reacts and compresses where weight is directly applied, so movement on one side of the mattress doesn’t cause vibration on the other side.

For couples, this can be a huge benefit. It’s particularly important if one of the sleepers is easily awoken and/or one of them moves during the night.. While the TEMPUR-Cloud won’t eliminate every last bit of motion transfer, it’s effective for almost all couples who want to protect against mid-sleep disturbances.

Pressure Relief

8.5/10

TEMPURPEDIC_TEMPUR_CLOUD_PRESSURE_STOMACH

The TEMPUR-Cloud offers sleepers above-average pressure relief. Memory foam was built to contour to the body and cushion against the impact of a space shuttle launch, which means that it’s more than capable of accommodating sharp pressure points. In doing so, it can reduce pain in key zones of the body and support proper spinal alignment.

The only reason why the TEMPUR-Cloud doesn’t get a perfect score for pressure relief is that some sleepers, such as people over 230 pounds and many stomach sleepers, find the deep contouring to be excessive and even capable of generating strain on certain parts of the body.

Temperature Control

5.5/10

TEMPURPEDIC_TEMPUR_CLOUD_HEATIRON

A downside of memory foam materials like TEMPUR foam is their tendency to retain heat. The main reason that this happens is that the close contouring of the foam to the body means that air can’t flow freely around the skin. As the body warms up, so does the foam, which actually makes it softer and more conforming, leading to even further reductions in airflow.

While this problem becomes most pronounced on very soft memory foam mattresses, it is still an important issue to consider on the TEMPUR-Cloud. People who already tend to sleep hot or people who live in hot climates may find that the bed’s lack of temperature neutrality is a deal-breaker.

Edge Support

6.5/10

TEMPURPEDIC_TEMPUR_CLOUD_EDGEPUSH

All-foam mattresses are susceptible to problems with edge support, and that holds true for the TEMPUR-Cloud. The deep sink of memory foam means that there’s a lot of compression around the perimeter, which is the weakest part of any mattress. That and memory foam’s limited bounce can make the edge feel even more unstable.

While this isn’t a huge problem for most people, it may be a turn off for those who typically sleep near the perimeter of their bed or often sit on the edge while they do other things.

Ease of Movement

5.5/10

The TEMPUR-Cloud gets a below-average rating for ease of movement because of the low level of responsiveness in the TEMPUR foam comfort system.

Part of the reason memory foam has its name is that the foam is slow to retake its original shape; it seems to briefly retain a “memory,” an impression in the foam, of the weight you applied. This slow rebound means that there is a risk of feeling “stuck” in the mattress, making it harder to switch your sleeping position or get out of bed.

Off-Gassing

6/10

The bed’s foam materials can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when the TEMPUR-Cloud is first removed from its packaging. These VOCs are not harmful, but they can give off a distinct odor that some call a “new mattress smell.”

For most people, this is only a minor annoyance, but it may be more problematic for people with strong allergies or sensitivities to smells. In almost all cases, the smell goes away within a few days of setting up the mattress. Allowing the bed to sit uncovered in a well-ventilated room will help to speed up the off-gassing process.

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud Mattress Review Breakdown

The TEMPUR-Cloud is Tempur-Pedic’s first foray into the mattress in a box mattress style, but its design nevertheless reflects that of many other Tempur-Pedic beds. It has an all-foam construction made with three interior layers.

The top two layers of the TEMPUR-Cloud are the comfort system, and both of these layers are made with TEMPUR memory foam. The TEMPUR foam in this mattress is specially formulated so that it can be compressed for shipping, but its performance parallels that of the original TEMPUR foam. That means excellent contouring to promote spinal alignment as well as a strong ability to limit motion transfer from one side of the bed to the other. The second layer of TEMPUR foam shares these properties but is made to be slightly firmer to help protect against “bottoming out” of the comfort system.

The support core is a thick layer of dense polyfoam that provides a sturdy base for the bed. The cover is made with a stretchy fabric that is also relatively soft and smooth. The overall firmness is medium (5) although some customers find it to lean toward medium firm (6).

One important note about the construction of this mattress is that Tempur-Pedic does not disclose the full mattress specifications. For example, they don’t share the thickness of the layers, the density of the foams, or the material composition of the cover, as all of these details are treated as proprietary. However, given Tempur-Pedic’s track record with memory foam materials, many shoppers are comfortable purchasing the TEMPUR-Cloud without knowing all of the nitty-gritty details.

Mattress Prices and Sizing

Tempur-Pedic is known for luxury mattresses that come with a higher price tag, and this holds true for the TEMPUR-Cloud, which costs more than most all-foam mattresses sold as a mattress in a box online. That said, because of the track record of Tempur-Pedic and its namesake memory foam, many customers find that the brand’s mattresses are a worthwhile investment. Among their product offerings, the TEMPUR-Cloud is the most affordable option.

The TEMPUR-Cloud measures in at 10 inches in height, and its weight is comparable to most other memory foam mattresses on the market. It is offered in all six of the standard mattress sizes.

Sizing and pricing details for the TEMPUR-Cloud are outlined in the following table. Be aware that the prices listed are the retail sticker price. In many cases, the company offers sales or promotions that provide customers a meaningful discount from this listed price.
