Founded in 2013, The Citizenry is a direct-to-consumer home goods retailer that sells bedding, rugs, bath accessories, and other furnishings. The Citizenry partners with artisans all over the world to produce handmade products from local materials.

The Citizenry sells two high-end sheet sets: Organic Turkish Cotton and Stonewashed Linen. Both collections are designed with breathability and softness in mind. The Organic Turkish Cotton Sheet Set has a smooth sateen weave and comes in a neutral color palette. The Stonewashed Linen Sheet Set has a relaxed look and features earthy tones.

We’ll provide a breakdown of the two sheet sets, including their performance, construction, materials, and pricing. We’ll also discuss general factors to consider when shopping for bedding, as well as care guidelines for The Citizenry sheets.

The Citizenry Sheets Review Breakdown

The Citizenry sheet sets are similarly priced, but each has its own unique look and feel. Linen naturally wicks away moisture, making the Stonewashed Linen Sheet Set an attractive choice for people who live in warm or humid climates. The Organic Turkish Cotton Sheet Set is made with a sateen weave, which gives the sheets a weightier feel.

Before purchasing a new sheet set, it’s always a good idea to double-check the sizing, color and design options, care instructions, and company policies. The Citizenry sheets are available in a large range of neutral colors, but they come in limited sizing options.

Materials and Construction

Linen and organic long-staple cotton share some similarities, including strong temperature regulation and resistance to pilling and tearing. As they are both natural materials, either one could appeal to eco-conscious shoppers. That said, the Stonewashed Linen and Organic Turkish Cotton Sheet Sets have some important differences due to their exact composition.

Stonewashed Linen: The Citizenry’s Stonewashed Linen Sheet Set is made from 100% French flax, which is a natural material. The sheets themselves are woven in Portugal, which is renowned for its tradition of producing fine linen. They hold certification from OEKO-TEX, which tests for harmful chemicals.

With a density of 160 grams per square meter (gsm), The Citizenry Linen Sheets are sturdy enough to be durable, yet light enough to resist heat buildup. As linen has moisture-wicking properties, this set is suitable for people who tend to sleep hot.

Linen has a tendency to billow out instead of clinging to the sleeper, which further increases breathability. The material can sometimes have a coarse feel, but these sheets are stonewashed to increase their softness. They will also soften with each wash. Though it’s resistant to pilling, linen does wrinkle easily and has more of a textured look when compared to sateen or percale sheets.

Organic Turkish Cotton: These sheets are made with long-staple organic cotton from Turkey. The longer cotton fibers increase durability, and the 400 thread count sateen weave gives the sheets a soft and smooth feel. The sheets hold certification from OEKO-TEX, and they are certified organic by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).

The Citizenry’s Organic Turkish Cotton Sheets have a slight initial sheen, and the sateen weave is heavier than other weaves. The fabric is breathable enough to keep sleepers cool during warmer months, but the denser weave makes the set suitable for winter use as well.

Prices and Sizing

The Stonewashed Linen collection is slightly more expensive than the Organic Turkish Cotton line. Both sheets have above-average price-points, though their cost is more accessible than many other luxury brands.

Linen requires a fairly complex manufacturing process, and organic cotton is a delicate crop. These factors raise the prices of both materials. However, linen and organic long-staple cotton are also two of the most breathable and durable bedding fabrics. If they’re within your budget, either sheet set from The Citizenry could represent a good long-term investment.

Both sets include the standard sheet assortment: one flat sheet, one fitted sheet, and two pillowcases. Fitted sheets, duvet covers, and sets of two pillowcases may be purchased separately.

Care and Cleaning

The Citizenry offers simple cleaning guidelines to help maintain the integrity of its sheets.

The Stonewashed Linen collection can be machine washed on the gentle cycle and tumble dried on a low heat setting. Removing the sheets from the dryer immediately can help minimize wrinkling. The Citizenry recommends using a mild liquid detergent, and cautions against using bleach-containing products.

You may notice some shedding as you are breaking in your linen sheets. Using wool dryer balls instead of dryer sheets may help increase their fluffiness. Linen is known for its rumpled look, but ironing the sheets on a mild linen setting can create a more polished look if that’s what you prefer.

The Organic Turkish Cotton sheets can be machine washed in cold water with mild liquid detergent. It’s best to use a gentle cycle and avoid bleach. As with the Stonewashed Linen Sheets, tumble dry on low heat and take the sheets out of the dryer as soon as they’re dry to reduce wrinkling.

It’s normal for these sateen sheets to lose some of their shine as time goes on. Sateen fabrics also pill more easily than other weaves, so try to avoid washing the sheets together with abrasive materials.
