Released in 2021, the Saatva Modern Foam Mattress adds to the company’s growing lineup with an all-foam construction featuring a neutral feel.

The Modern Foam Mattress has a quilted organic cotton cover and layers of convoluted polyfoam, gel-infused memory foam, and open-cell polyfoam. Thicker quilting and a dedicated strip of natural latex in the center third of the mattress provide zoned lumbar support. The mattress has a medium firmness, falling at a 5 out of 10 on our firmness scale. Its relatively plush surface helps prevent pressure points for side sleepers.

Saatva has an established reputation in the online mattress space. It’s best known for its flagship innerspring model, the Saatva Classic. The company also makes the Saatva Latex Hybrid, the flippable Zenhaven Latex Mattress, the memory foam Loom & Leaf, and an adjustable airbed mattress called the Solaire. For younger sleepers, Saatva offers the Crib Mattress and the dual-sided Saatva Youth. The company’s sturdiest model, the hybrid Saatva HD, is designed for heavier sleepers weighing up to 500 pounds.

We’ll discuss the construction and performance of the Modern Foam Mattress to help you decide if this option from Saatva is the right model for you. We’ll also provide practical information on the company’s sleep trial, warranty, and shipping policies.

Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation

Despite its all-foam construction, the Saatva Modern Foam Mattress allows more motion transfer than similarly built models.

Memory foam is known for its ability to mold to a sleeper’s body in response to pressure, thus preventing movement from rippling across the surface. As a result, mattresses with thick layers of memory foam tend to isolate motion well.

By contrast, the top layers of the Saatva Modern Foam Mattress consist of latex and polyfoam, which are moderately resilient. The mattress does have a thin layer of memory foam, but it is located lower in the overall construction and does not contribute as much to motion isolation.

While the mattress lacks bouncy components such as innerspring coils, sleepers who are sensitive to their partner’s movements may want to look for a model containing more memory foam.

Pressure Relief

The Saatva Modern Foam Mattress delivers above-average pressure relief, particularly for individuals with lower back pain.

Components such as convoluted polyfoam and memory foam contour to the sleeper, and the latex layer in the center third of the mattress cushions the lumbar spine. This extra support helps maintain spinal alignment and reduces pressure buildup in this sensitive area.

With its medium firmness, the Modern Foam Mattress provides the best pressure relief for side sleepers. These individuals are prone to pressure points in the hips and shoulders, and they usually feel most comfortable on a softer mattress.

Temperature Control

Various features in the Saatva Modern Foam Mattress are intended to optimize temperature control and reduce heat retention.

Although the mattress leaves little room for airflow around the sleeper, the cotton cover provides a breathable sleep surface. Convoluted polyfoam also retains less heat than solid polyfoam, since it contains multiple channels where air can flow through.

While memory foam tends to trap heat, the Modern Foam Mattress contains gel infusions designed to draw heat away from the sleeper, and the open-cell polyfoam in the support core allows for increased airflow throughout the mattress.

Hot sleepers generally fare better with a hybrid or innerspring model, but the Saatva Modern Foam Mattress may be a viable option for hot sleepers who prefer an all-foam design.

Edge Support

The Modern Foam Mattress provides average edge support. With a 4-inch comfort system and a relatively plush feel, sleepers can expect the perimeter to compress to a moderate degree under pressure. However, the polyfoam support core holds up fairly well considering this is an all-foam model without dedicated edge support.

Sitting or sleeping near the edges of the bed may feel unstable for some, particularly people who weigh more than 230 pounds or those who are used to the sturdier perimeters of hybrid or innerspring models.

Ease of Movement

While the all-foam construction and medium firmness allows sleepers to sink in somewhat, the Modern Foam Mattress only contains an inch of memory foam located lower in the comfort layers.

Although memory foam is slow to regain its original shape, the polyfoam and latex in the upper layers spring back more quickly. This means that adjusting positions should be easier than on a traditional memory foam mattress.

The Saatva Modern Foam Mattress has several advantages for sex, most notably its virtually silent construction.

The latex layer also supplies a small amount of responsiveness, making it easier to move around on top of the bed. It has decent temperature control for a foam mattress, and most people should find they can use the majority of the bed’s surface without fears of falling off.

Partners often prefer a hybrid or latex mattress, as these styles have notable bounce and strong edges. However, the Modern Foam Mattress shouldn’t pose any significant impediments to sex.

Like most foam mattresses, this Saatva model may emit a slight odor when it is first unboxed. Known as off-gassing, this scent occurs when volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the foams are released into the air.

The Saatva Modern Foam Mattress carries a seal from CertiPUR-US confirming that its VOC levels fall within established safety limits. Off-gassing odors usually dissipate over the course of a few days, provided the mattress is aired out in a well-ventilated space.

The convoluted polyfoam and open-cell construction of the mattress permit more room for airflow to help VOCs disperse more quickly. However, those who are sensitive to smell may want to avoid sleeping on the mattress during the off-gassing process.

Side Sleepers: With 4 inches of pressure-relieving comfort layers, the Saatva Modern Foam Mattress is ideal for side sleepers.

The quilted cover provides initial cushioning, and the ridged surface of the convoluted polyfoam is designed to enhance pressure relief. The memory foam layer cradles the hips and shoulders and reduces the pressure that can sometimes build up in these contact points.

Side sleepers under 230 pounds exert less pressure on the mattress. These individuals typically prefer a softer surface, but the mattress’ medium (5) firmness provides adequate cushioning. In turn, side sleepers over 230 pounds sink in further and receive more direct benefit from the memory foam layer.

Back Sleepers: The Modern Foam Mattress performs well for back sleepers, particularly those weighing less than 130 pounds.

For back sleepers, a moderate firmness level is usually best. A certain level of cushioning can reduce pressure buildup, but the mattress must also be firm enough to encourage neutral spinal alignment. This model falls in the middle of the firmness scale, providing strong levels of both pressure relief and support.

The Saatva Modern Foam Mattress also includes thoughtfully placed padding and natural latex in the lower back area. These materials support the lumbar spine to help sleepers maintain a healthy posture.

Stomach Sleepers: Most stomach sleepers should receive adequate support from the Saatva Modern Foam Mattress, though it’s best suited for those who weigh less than 130 pounds.

Sleeping face down can sometimes cause the midsection to sag into the mattress. This can strain the lower back and lead to pressure buildup, which is why stomach sleepers require a firmer surface to keep the spine aligned.

Although the Modern Foam Mattress is fairly plush, it offers more support than the typical memory foam mattress. Additionally, the lumbar layer buoys the midsection to prevent excessive sinkage. While individuals may experience slight aches and pains after spending a long time in this position, stomach sleepers should generally find the mattress suitable for their needs.

Saatva Modern Foam Mattress Review Breakdown

The Saatva Modern Foam Mattress has a breathable organic cotton cover that is quilted with polyfoam and treated with antimicrobials. Additional quilting in the center third of the cover is designed for enhanced lumbar support. Instead of chemicals, Saatva includes a nontoxic thistle flame barrier to meet fire safety regulations.

A half-inch strip of natural latex in the lumbar area supports the lower back and adds responsiveness to enable easier movement. This layer is also intended to protect against body impressions.

In the main part of the comfort system, there is a 2-inch layer of convoluted polyfoam, commonly known as egg-crate foam. With its characteristic dips and swirls, this layer adds contouring and provides space for airflow. It’s followed by a 1-inch layer of pressure-relieving memory foam with gel infusions engineered to fight heat retention.

A 7-inch polyfoam support core provides a stable base that helps maintain spinal alignment. The polyfoam has an open-cell design intended to trap less heat.

Measuring 11 inches thick with a medium (5) firmness, the Saatva Modern Foam Mattress is on the plusher side, though its use of higher-density polyfoam above the memory foam layer prevents excessive sinkage.

Saatva uses foams that are certified by CertiPUR-US, an independent organization that tests for levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), heavy metals, and other harmful substances. The mattress holds a seal of approval from the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations, indicating it is considered supportive for people with back pain.

Mattress Prices and Sizing

Additions such as targeted lumbar support, a natural flame barrier, and gel-infused memory foam justify the slightly higher price-point of the Saatva Modern Foam Mattress. This model is also more affordable than Saatva’s other all-foam mattress, the Loom & Leaf.

When considering that the cost of White Glove delivery and old mattress removal are built into the price of the bed, the Saatva Modern Foam Mattress falls more in line with competing memory foam models. These services are usually offered for at least $100 from most online mattress companies.

The Modern Foam Mattress comes in six standard sizes as well as split king. Shoppers can add a foundation or other bedding at the time of purchase for an additional cost.
