Idle Sleep is a Colorado-based sleep company with a range of mattresses and sleep accessories that can be purchased through its online store. The Idle Sleep Latex Hybrid mattress, the focus of this review, offers a high quality and exceptionally durable bed that’s comfortable for a wide range of sleepers.
The company also offers three other mattress models:
Idle Sleep sets itself apart from other online mattress shops with its outstanding customer service policies including a 540-night sleep trial. With the exception of the Idle Gel Plush, all of Idle’s mattresses are double-sided and flippable.
If you’re considering the Idle Sleep Latex Hybrid mattress, we’ll break down everything you need about this bed including pricing, construction, performance, and customer reviews.
The Idle Sleep Hybrid Latex mattress is a 14-inch flippable hybrid mattress. Encased in an organic cotton cover, this bed features a natural comfort system composed of a 1-inch layer of quilted wool and 3 inches of Dunlop latex. 6 inches of edge-to-edge pocketed coils make up this bed’s support core.
The Idle Sleep Hybrid Latex mattress features a two-sided construction. Each side of the mattress contains wool and latex comfort layers. This allows you to flip your mattress, limiting sag and extending the life of your mattress. The Idle Sleep Latex mattress’s two-sided construction and study latex hybrid build makes it a standout option in terms of durability.
The Idle Sleep Hybrid Latex mattress comes in two comfort options: medium firm (6) and firm (8). Idle Sleep also offers the option for dual firmness with a medium firm comfort system on one side and a firm comfort system on the other side for no additional cost. While the standard version of the Idle Sleep Latex mattress uses Dunlop latex in its construction, customers also have the option to go with Talalay latex for an added charge.
Idle Sleep carries a range of sleep accessories. The company frequently holds promotions such as free memory foam pillows with your mattress order. Other popular add-ons include an adjustable base, mattress foundation, mattress protector, and bed sheets.
The Idle Sleep Hybrid Latex mattress is constructed with three distinct layers encased in an organic cotton cover. It’s also double-sided so that you can flip your mattress and extend its lifespan.
1″ Wool (both sides)
3″ Latex (both sides)
6″ pocketed coils
The Idle Sleep Hybrid Latex, a high profile mattress at 14 inches in height, is on the upper end of the price range for a new mattress. However, its cost is in the average range of similarly constructed natural latex hybrids. Additionally, the Idle Sleep Latex comes with several features that make this mattress an excellent value.
First, the Idle Sleep Hybrid Latex mattress is flippable. That means you can flip your mattress to limit wear and extend its lifespan. Second, Idle offers some of the most extensive customer service policies in the mattress industry, including an 18-month sleep trial and lifetime warranty.
In addition to the standard twin through California king sizes, the Idle Sleep Hybrid Latex mattress is available in a Split king. The Split king comes as two twin XLs. This choice provides a sleep surface area similar to a regular king but works well for couples who have different comfort preferences. The Split king is slightly more expensive than the standard king or California king options.
Idle Sleep also offers its Latex Hybrid mattress in Talalay latex for an additional cost. The standard Idle Latex Hybrid uses Dunlop latex. While both options are natural latex, Talalay latex is softer and less dense.
Note that the prices below are for the Dunlop latex model.

The Idle Sleep Hybrid Latex mattress scores slightly above average for motion isolation. This category evaluates a mattress’s ability to dampen the transfer of motion across its surface.
This is an important category to consider for couples who plan on sharing the same mattress. With poor motion isolation, it’s easy to disturb your partner when changing sleep positions or getting up to use the bathroom during the night.
Mattress materials contribute the most to motion isolation performance, with memory foam considered to be the best material for dampening movement. While the Idle Sleep Hybrid Latex mattress does not dampen motion as well as a memory foam mattress, its latex comfort system does well to absorb movement across the sleep surface.
Medium Firm: 4/5, Firm: 3/5
The medium firm version of the Idle Sleep Hybrid Latex mattress provides superior pressure relief. The firm version performed slightly above average in this category, but is only suitable for those who prefer very firm support.
Pressure relief refers to how well a mattress meets the contours of the body. This helps promote proper spinal alignment and redistribute weight to relieve the major pressure points that are prone to pain including the shoulders, hips, and lower back. The right amount of pressure relief is somewhat subjective and will depend on a sleeper’s weight and general comfort preferences.
The comfort system of the Idle Sleep Hybrid Latex is composed of 1 inch of quilted wool and 3 inches of natural Dunlop latex. Latex doesn’t always provide the same level of contouring as memory foam, but we found the medium firm version of the Idle Sleep Hybrid Latex mattress offered just the right amount of body hugging to make this a comfortable sleep surface.
However, the more dense construction of the firm option negatively impacts the bed’s cushioning, making it a less comfortable option for most.
Similar to other latex mattresses, the Idle Sleep Latex mattress provides a strong degree of temperature control to sleepers throughout the night. Temperature regulation is a key mattress performance metric for many, especially if you tend to sleep hot.
Multiple factors can influence how well your body regulates its temperature throughout the night, including your clothing, bedding, and bedroom temperature. Materials and construction also have a significant impact on temperature control. Memory foam mattresses are particularly notorious for sleeping hot.
The hybrid latex construction of this Idle Sleep mattress creates an exceptionally temperature neutral sleep surface, even for warm sleepers. Latex provides more breathability than foam construction and the 6 inches of pocketed coils that make up this mattress’s support core provide ample airflow. We found that both the medium firm and the firm versions performed strongly in the category.
The Idle Sleep Hybrid Latex mattress contains a sturdy and firm perimeter that supports the weight of sleepers at its edges. Strong edge support allows a mattress to bear weight and resist sagging. This increases the usable surface area as well as the lifespan of your mattress.
Edge support is important for couples sharing the same sleep surface as well as sleepers who like to sleep or sit on the edge of their bed. It can also make getting in and out of bed easier for those with reduced mobility.
The Idle Sleep Hybrid Latex mattress’s strong edge support comes from its solid construction. The dense Dunlop latex used in its comfort system does not significantly compress when weight is applied. The 6 inches of pocketed coils also provide additional support. This durable construction means the Idle Latex Hybrid can be expected to support your weight at its edge today as well as years into the future.
Medium Firm: 3/5, Firm: 4/5
The Idle Sleep Hybrid Latex mattress lends itself well to easy movement. The firm version of this mattress performed particularly well in this category while the medium firm option performed above average.
Ease of movement is a factor of resilience, or how quickly a material retakes its original shape once you remove your weight. In practical terms, this translates to how much bounce a bed feels like it has.
Highly resilient mattresses are bouncier, which can make moving across your mattress surface or getting in and out of bed much easier. Innerspring mattresses tend to have the most bounce, but this comes at the cost of reduced motion isolation.
The 6 inches of pocketed coils in the Idle Latex Hybrid’s support core give this mattress enough bounce to make movement easy without sacrificing too much in terms of motion isolation. Due to its reduced contouring, we found the firm version performed better in this category than its medium firm counterpart.
While many people will use their bed exclusively for sleep, it’s important to consider mattress performance in the context of other activities. For couples, this means thinking about sex.
How well a mattress performs during sex relies mainly on its ease of movement and cushioning. Despite the firm option performing slightly better in our ‘Ease of Movement’ evaluation, we found that both the firm and medium firm version of the Idle Latex Hybrid were great options for sexual activity.
Mattresses with more bounce and better ease of movement are typically better for sex, while those that are too highly-contouring with little bounce create the feeling of sinking into the sleep surface. This can impede motion and make it harder to change positions. That being said, mattresses that are too firm may not provide enough cushioning for the impact of sexual activity.
The Idle Latex Hybrid strikes a balance with its construction. Pocketed coils provide the right level of bounce, while its latex-based comfort system offers just enough cushioning.
The Idle Latex Hybrid off-gasses minimally after unboxing. Some mattress manufacturing processes create volatile organic compound (VOC) byproducts. These VOCs aren’t generally considered to be harmful, but they can give off an unpleasant “new mattress” odor.
Bed-in-a-box style mattresses are usually vacuum-sealed directly after production. While this makes packing and shipping easier, it means any residual VOCs are sealed in with the mattress until it’s unboxed by the customer. Odors can take from a few hours to a few days to completely dissipate.
Because the Idle Latex Hybrid uses natural materials in its construction including latex, wool, and organic cotton, it emits very little off-gassing odor. You can expect any initial odor after unboxing to dissipate completely within a day or less.
The Idle Latex Hybrid performs well for those who prefer to sleep on their side. Side sleepers place more pressure on their shoulders and hips, and require the right balance of cushioning and support to ease these areas. If a mattress is too soft, the hips and shoulders may sink too deeply into the sleep surface and disrupt the proper alignment of the spine. However, if a mattress is too firm, it can lead to pressure buildup and discomfort in the shoulders and hips for side sleepers. Most side sleepers prefer a medium or medium firm mattress with moderate contouring.
Both firmnesses of the Idle Latex Hybrid scored highly for side sleepers above 130 pounds. Most preferred the medium firm model, though the firm is a solid choice for those who prefer a firmer, more supportive sleep surface. Side sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds found the Latex Hybrid a bit too firm and will likely be best off on a softer model with more ample cushioning.
Most back sleepers enjoy a medium to medium firm sleep surface that provides substantial support with a moderate amount of body-hugging to cushion the lower back. Back sleepers tend to place the most pressure on the lumbar area or lower back. Overly soft and contouring mattresses can cause the midsection to sink into the sleep surface, over- exaggerating the natural curve of the lower spine. On the other hand, an overly firm mattress that doesn’t provide enough cushioning also detracts from proper spinal alignment.
The Idle Latex Hybrid manages to strike just the right balance for back sleepers. Back sleepers in every weight category experienced a pain-free, comfortable night’s sleep with the Idle Latex Hybrid. We found that both the medium firm and firm versions performed best for back sleepers who weigh less than 230 pounds. Back sleepers over 230 pounds will likely prefer the additional support of the firm option.
Like back sleepers, stomach sleepers are at risk of improper spinal alignment in the lower back. They need a firmer mattress that balances contouring comfort with strong support.
We found the Idle Latex Hybrid performed well for stomach sleepers of all sizes, offering a supportive yet well-cushioned surface. We found that the firm option provided comfort for stomach sleepers over 130 pounds, while the medium firm option works well for stomach sleepers of all sizes.
