Idle Sleep is a Colorado-based mattress brand that has received praise from mattress shoppers for its customer-friendly policies and diverse product line.

Four distinct models make up the brand’s current mattress lineup. The Idle and the Idle Gel Plush are all-foam models, the Idle Hybrid is a flippable hybrid model, and the Idle Latex Hybrid is a flippable organic latex model available with both Talalay or Dunlop latex. Idle Sleep also produces other sleep accessories, including adjustable bases, a foundation, sheets, a mattress protector, and a memory foam pillow.

The Idle Sleep Gel Plush is one of the brand’s all-foam models. It is a medium model, rating at a 5 on the 10-point firmness scale. Four layers of foam give the bed its combination of plushness and support, while gel infusions in the top two layers combat heat buildup.

We’ll provide an in-depth look at the Idle Sleep Gel Plush’s construction and pricing. We’ll also assess its performance, detail customer reviews, and summarize some of the most important company policies to keep in mind as you shop.

Idle Sleep Gel Plush Mattress Review Breakdown

The Idle Sleep Gel Plush Mattress is a luxury all-foam model with four layers of foam. A quilted cover cools and cushions the mattress surface. The cover itself is made of a cool-to-the-touch Ice Fabric with gel sewn in for enhanced temperature regulation. A 1-inch layer of gel-infused polyfoam is quilted into the cover to relieve pressure while allowing for airflow through the mattress. This material also has a somewhat buoyant feel to make it easier to move around on the surface of the bed.

Underneath the cover, there is a natural cotton fire-resistant barrier. The comfort layer is made up of 2 more inches of gel-infused polyfoam engineered for cooling, pressure relief, and buoyancy. A 3-inch transition layer of memory foam gives deeper contouring while acting as a barrier between the comfort system and the bed’s core. This custom foam is also crafted to regain its shape more quickly and retain less heat than standard memory foam.

An 8-inch polyfoam core adds to the bed’s support and durability. It uses a high-density polyfoam material that should hold up well over time. A fireproof cotton barrier rests beneath the core, and a removable, washable base cloth wraps around the outside.

In total, the mattress measures 14 inches thick. This makes it a high-profile model that may require an extra deep sheet set.

Mattress Prices and Sizing

The Idle Sleep Gel Plush Mattress comes in at a slightly higher price point than average for an all-foam mattress. But this price difference isn’t significant enough that it should deter shoppers from buying the Sleep Gel Plush Mattress, especially since its advanced materials, lengthy trial and warranty policies, and strong performance may justify the added expense. Additionally, Idle Sleep often runs discounts that knock the price down to around the average price of an all-foam model.

Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation

While many all-foam models excel in terms of motion isolation, the Idle Sleep Gel Plush Mattress is no exception. It absorbs most vibrations, so most sleepers won’t notice when their partner moves or gets up during the night.

This strong motion isolation is due to the bed’s four foam layers. The quilted cover dampens movement on the surface of the bed, while the polyfoam comfort layer and memory foam transition layer isolate more significant motion.

Thanks to its above-average motion isolation, those who usually wake up when their partner moves may get a better night’s sleep on the Gel Plush Mattress.

Pressure Relief

Many all-foam models perform well in pressure relief, and the Gel Plush Mattress is no exception. Sleepers with sharp pressure points should enjoy enough pressure relief to ease the usual aches and pains that can result from pressure buildup.

The Idle Sleep Gel Plush Mattress achieves its notable pressure relief through its construction and materials. A quilted cover gives surface-level cushioning, a polyfoam comfort layer helps distribute the sleeper’s body weight more evenly across the bed, and a memory foam transition layer adds deeper contouring.

Side sleepers who weigh under 230 pounds are likely to experience the best blend of contouring and support. Their hips and shoulders can sink in, reducing pressure from these wider areas while supporting their natural spinal alignment.

Temperature Control

Mattresses that contain memory foam do not usually excel at temperature regulation because the material’s close hug can trap heat. While the Gel Plush Mattress may retain some heat, it performs better in this category than some similarly constructed mattresses on the market.

This is due to the bed’s cooling materials and construction techniques. The cover is made of cool-to-the-touch fabric with gel sewn in. Two layers of gel-infused polyfoam make up the bed’s comfort system. Polyfoam typically allows for more air circulation than memory foam, so the sleeper’s body heat can dissipate naturally. The gel infusions also enhance the bed’s temperature regulation by transferring heat away from the body. The memory foam used in the transition layer is also engineered to retain less heat than most memory foam.

While it doesn’t have the same breathability as most hybrid or innerspring models, the Gel Plush Mattress may be a good option for sleepers looking for an all-foam mattress without excessive heat retention.

Edge Support

Sleepers may notice some sinkage around the perimeter of the Gel Plush Mattress, which is typical for most all-foam models.

The Gel Plush’s foam layers compress when you sit or sleep near the edge of the bed, and this could make it feel unstable. When sleeping on a mattress without enough edge support, some individuals gravitate towards the center to avoid the feeling that they may roll off the bed. This may limit the usable surface of the bed, which could leave couples with less room to change positions during the night. Individuals who like to sit on the edge of the bed may also find it more difficult on models with less edge support.

Ease of Movement

Memory foam often makes mattresses more difficult to move on because of its slower response to changes in pressure and its close hug. While the Gel Plush Mattress contains memory foam, it performs better in this category than some all-foam models.

Two layers of polyfoam make up the comfort system, giving the bed its moderate ease of movement scores. Polyfoam typically responds quickly to changes in pressure, so there shouldn’t be a lingering impression of the sleeper’s body impeding their movement. Most individuals will likely find the Gel Plush Mattress easy enough to move on, but some sleepers with mobility issues may struggle more.

Like most all-foam models, sex is not the Gel Plush Mattress’s strong suit. The Gel Plush’s foam layers shape to the body, which can provide traction but may also restrict movement. Its polyfoam comfort system is more responsive than most memory foam, but it doesn’t have as much bounce as couples tend to prefer for sex. Couples may also feel the need to steer clear of the edges in order to feel secure on the mattress surface.

The upside is that this all-foam mattress is virtually silent, making any amorous activity more discreet.

Odors may emanate from any new mattress. Smells from the manufacturing process often linger in the materials, especially if the mattress ships compressed and doesn’t have time to air out before you introduce it into your room. Synthetic foam tends to be more prone to off-gassing odors than other materials.

Since Idle Sleep does not compress the mattress long before shipping, it may be slightly less prone to off-gassing odors than some models, but it will likely still have an initial new mattress smell.

If you leave the mattress in a room with good airflow, most smells should air out within a couple of days.

Sleeping Style and Body Weight

Side Sleepers:
The Idle Sleep Gel Plush Mattress’s close cradling and strong pressure relief make it a good option for side sleepers below 230 pounds.

Its quilted polyfoam cover, polyfoam comfort layer, and memory foam transition layer combine to total 6 inches, leaving ample room for a side sleeper’s hips and shoulders to sink in. The Sleep Gel Plush Mattress redistributes the force of the sleeper’s weight to reduce pressure buildup around the widest parts of their body. However, the memory foam transition layer also limits excessive sinkage to help the sleeper maintain proper spinal alignment.

Because of the Gel Plush Mattress’s medium feel, it is perhaps best suited to individuals who weigh under 230 pounds. Side sleepers in this weight group should experience an optimal balance of contouring and support, which can provide significant pressure relief while promoting good spinal alignment. Those who weigh more than 230 pounds are also likely to experience their hips and shoulders sinking in more than ideal for proper spinal alignment.

Back Sleepers:

The Gel Plush Mattress may be a worthwhile option for back sleepers to consider, especially if they weigh less than 130 pounds. To keep their spines well aligned, back sleepers typically need a bed that lets their hips sink in a bit without letting them droop too far into the bed. The Gel Plush Mattress’s quilted polyfoam cover and polyfoam comfort layer cradle a back sleeper’s hips, while the memory foam transition layer gives deeper contouring and support.

Back sleepers usually need a slightly firmer mattress than side sleepers, so the Gel Plush Mattress’s medium feel may be most appropriate for those who weigh less 130 pounds. People who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds may find that their hips could sink in more than ideal, particularly if they carry much of their body weight near their midsections. Individuals who weigh more than 230 pounds might find it more difficult to maintain their spinal alignment due to sinkage around their hips.

Stomach Sleepers:
Like back sleepers, midsection sinkage can be a big problem for stomach sleepers. Since many people carry a lot of their body weight around their hips and bellies, lying face down can allow this extra weight to pull the middle of the body more deeply into the bed and put a strain on the spine.

Stomach sleepers typically benefit from a firmer mattress, so as a medium model, the Gel Plush Mattress may be slightly softer than ideal. However, it may be comfortable for some stomach sleepers, especially combination sleepers who also sleep in other positions throughout the night.

The Gel Plush Mattress should hug and support the bodies of stomach sleepers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds, but their hips may dip in a bit more than they’d like. Stomach sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds may experience more significant sagging near their midsections, which could contribute to lumbar discomfort.
