Established in 2015 in Frankfurt, Germany, Emma Sleep produces a small but high-quality line of direct-to-consumer mattresses. The flagship Emma Mattress is an all-foam model, and the premium Emma ACT Hybrid Mattress is an 11-inch thick hybrid with a medium firm (6) feel.

The Emma ACT Hybrid Mattress features a contouring comfort system made with a layer of graphite-infused polyfoam over a layer of memory foam. The core consists of more than 300 pocketed coils and a base layer of dense polyfoam. Made with Emma’s innovative active cooling technology (ACT), this model provides very good temperature control for hot sleepers.

Like many of the best hybrid mattresses, the Emma ACT Hybrid combines some of the most popular features of innerspring and foam beds. However, if you prefer the feel of an all-foam bed, the Emma Original Mattress features all-foam construction at a lower price-point.

We’ll provide a comprehensive overview of the Emma ACT Hybrid Mattress, including the bed’s materials, pricing, sizing, performance, and customer service policies.

Emma ACT Hybrid Mattress Review Breakdown

The Emma ACT Hybrid Mattress has a top comfort layer of polyfoam that features Emma Sleep’s Active Cooling Technology (ACT). This technology integrates graphite particles into the polyfoam, which is intended to dissipate excess body heat. A layer of memory foam beneath provides additional pressure relief.

Within the core, over 300 pocketed coils adjust to each part of the body for breathable, dynamic support. A final layer of polyfoam supports and stabilizes the mattress. Firm polyfoam also wraps around the perimeter of the spring system to reinforce the edge. Every layer of the Emma ACT Hybrid meets OEKO-TEX Standard 100 guidelines related to harmful substances.

The lower portion of the cover uses a polyester-polypropylene blend. Meanwhile, the upper cover features a soft, stretchy, breathable combination of polyester, lyocell, and elastane. This top portion is also removable and washable for easy cleaning. Altogether, the Emma ACT Hybrid’s layers total 11 inches thick and deliver a medium firm (6) feel. This construction strikes a good balance between contouring, support, and breathability for most sleepers.

Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation

With a two-layer comfort system made from polyfoam and memory foam, the Emma ACT Hybrid provides a reasonable degree of motion isolation. The foam absorbs motion, preventing it from traveling across the mattress surface. On the Emma ACT Hybrid, your partner’s tossing and turning may not disturb your slumber.

However, like many hybrid beds, the coil core of the Emma ACT Hybrid is fairly bouncy. Since the coils are pocketed, minimal vibrations should travel between them. Still, very light sleepers who share their bed with a partner may notice some movement.

Pressure Relief

The Emma ACT Hybrid helps reduce pressure buildup by redistributing weight. The bed’s comfort system features layers of polyfoam and memory foam that contour to the body and cushion common pressure points, including the hips and shoulders.

Our testers generally reported that the Emma ACT Hybrid cradled them nicely when they laid on their sides, backs, and stomachs. However, the surface may allow stomach sleepers over 230 pounds to sink too far into the mattress, leading to strain on the lower back.

Temperature Control

Due to its unique design, the Emma ACT Hybrid is competitive with the best cooling mattresses available on the market. The Emma ACT Hybrid contains a top layer of graphite-infused polyfoam, part of the company’s innovative active cooling technology (ACT). The graphite particles are intended to transfer heat away from the body. Additionally, the bed’s breathable cover and pocketed coil core help promote airflow through the mattress.

Together, these features are designed to prevent overheating by dispersing heat. Our testing confirmed that the Emma ACT Hybrid provided very good temperature regulation, which is in line with other hybrid models.

Edge Support

Another category where the Emma ACT Hybrid performs very well is edge support. A mattress with strong edge support can withstand your body weight even at the outermost perimeter, increasing the usable surface area of your mattress.

The Emma ACT Hybrid’s construction creates robust edge support. The core uses over 300 pocketed coils and a layer of dense polyfoam to resist sagging even when sitting at the edge of the bed. An extra layer of firm polyfoam around the perimeter further stabilizes the surface. Although the comfort system compresses slightly when bearing weight, the Emma ACT Hybrid maintains its supportive feel along the perimeter.

Ease of Movement

The Emma ACT Hybrid offers good ease of movement. Sleepers should feel a noticeable bounce from the coil system, which makes getting in and out of bed and changing sleep positions easier. However, the bed’s polyfoam and memory foam comfort system dampens movement slightly. While this material is responsive to changes in pressure, its conforming feel could seem a bit restrictive to some sleepers.

Thanks to its responsive design, the Emma ACT Hybrid is suitable for sexual activity. Comfort preferences are subjective. However, the best beds for sex tend to have bounce and moderate contouring to add traction while limiting sinkage.

The Emma ACT Hybrid’s pocketed coil core is springy and relatively easy to move on, which couples typically prefer for sex. The bed’s comfort system cushions the surface to reduce pressure points. That said, some couples may find that the Emma ACT Hybrid contours too deeply and stifles movement. This is particularly likely if one or both partners weigh more than 230 pounds.

Certain mattress materials emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in a process known as off-gassing. VOCs are a byproduct of the manufacturing process and are generally considered harmless. However, they can create an unpleasant odor. Synthetic foam tends to give off more VOCs than other materials.

With polyfoam and memory foam in the comfort system, the Emma ACT Hybrid may have a distinct smell when you first remove it from the packaging. That said, the bed performs well in off-gassing compared to similarly constructed models. Smells should dissipate quickly. Additionally, every layer of the Emma ACT Hybrid Mattress meets the OEKO-TEX Standard 100. This certification means that the materials have been tested for harmful substances.

Sleeping Style and Body Weight

Side Sleepers:
The Emma Act Hybrid’s poly and memory foam comfort system and medium firm feel create a comfortable sleep surface for most side sleepers. Side sleepers tend to place a great deal of pressure on their hips and shoulders. The Emma ACT Hybrid’s comfort system contours and cushions these pressure points to limit discomfort. Moreover, the Emma ACT Hybrid’s coil core prevents the hips and shoulders from sinking too deeply, thereby promoting proper spinal alignment for side sleepers.

Our testers who sleep on their sides and weigh between 130 and 230 pounds found the Emma ACT Hybrid especially comfortable. The Emma ACT Hybrid may feel too firm for some sleepers under 130 pounds and may permit too much sinkage for some sleepers over 230 pounds. However, overall, this model is comfortable for most side sleepers regardless of weight.

Back Sleepers:
When you sleep on your back, your body weight is more evenly distributed. As a result, back sleepers tend to enjoy a moderately contouring, medium firm to firm mattress. Our testers found that the Emma ACT Hybrid’s medium firm feel provides ample comfort for back sleeping.

For most back sleepers, the Emma ACT Hybrid Mattress provides a good balance of support and contouring to cradle the natural curvature of the spine. The surface is particularly appropriate for back sleepers up to 130 pounds. Back sleepers who weigh over 130 pounds may prefer a slightly firmer mattress, though most should still find the Emma ACT Hybrid comfortable.

Stomach Sleepers:
The Emma ACT Hybrid Mattress meets the needs of many stomach sleepers under 230 pounds. Like back sleepers, stomach sleepers are at risk of misalignment around the lower back. If you sleep on your stomach, a bed that’s medium firm to firm can cushion your body while preventing your midsection from sagging too deeply into the surface.

Due to the Emma ACT Hybrid’s pocketed coil core and medium firm feel, the sleep surface helps support neutral spine alignment for many stomach sleepers. However, the Emma ACT Hybrid may let stomach sleepers over 230 pounds sink in too deeply, potentially creating lumbar strain.
