Molecule launched in 2018 with the Molecule Mattress, designed to promote rest and recovery for athletes and people who lead an active lifestyle. Following the wide success of its mattress, Molecule has since expanded to other types of sleep essentials, including pillows, sheets, and mattress toppers. The Molecule AirTEC Mattress Topper combines three layers of open-cell memory foam, AirTEC foam, and polyfoam to provide sleepers with a cool, conforming surface.

To help you decide if the Molecule AirTEC Mattress Topper could be a good fit for you, we’ll discuss the topper’s construction and how it performs for different types of sleepers. We’ll also cover the pricing, shipping, and company policies.

Molecule Mattress Topper Review Breakdown

The memory foam used in the Molecule AirTEC Mattress Topper is highly conforming, which helps relieve pressure points. The AirTEC Mattress Topper also contains a second layer of resilient AirTEC foam, and a slightly denser polyfoam in the base layer. This multilayered construction helps maintain spinal alignment, especially for side sleepers.

A breathable cover, open-cell memory foam, and layer of proprietary AirTEC foam are designed to enhance temperature regulation for hot sleepers. As with most memory foam mattress toppers, the Molecule AirTEC Mattress Topper isolates most motion transfer so that bed partners experience less sleep disturbances.

Materials and Construction

The Molecule AirTEC Mattress Topper is constructed using three layers. The top layer consists of 1 inch of open-cell memory foam, designed to conform to the body and prevent pressure points from forming. The open-cell construction helps regulate temperature compared to traditional memory foam.

The second layer is 1 inch of unique proprietary foam that is significantly less dense than most polyfoams. Modeled after latex, this resilient material allows ample room for air to flow through and draw away heat from the sleep surface. Below this is a denser 1-inch layer of polyfoam, designed to add support and promote proper spinal alignment.

The mattress topper also features a fabric cover made using a polyester, polyethylene, and elastane blend. This blend is intended to promote temperature neutrality by drawing heat away from the body.

Molecule produces its foams using variable pressure foaming, which significantly reduces chemical emissions. All of the materials in the Molecule AirTEC Mattress Topper are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning that they have undergone testing by a third-party organization and have not been found to contain dangerous chemicals.

Mattress Topper Performance Ratings

The Molecule AirTEC Mattress Topper performs well for sleepers of most body types and sleep positions, and particularly for those who sleep on their side. The memory foam contours to the body and helps reduce pressure at the hips and shoulders.

Although the topper is not exactly bouncy, the layers of polyfoam and AirTEC foam help prevent sleepers from feeling stuck in the bed. The topper is designed with an emphasis on staying cool, and it performs remarkably well in this aspect considering its foam construction.

We’ll take a closer look at how the Molecule AirTEC Mattress Topper stacks up in terms of important performance factors such as motion isolation, ease of movement, and durability.

Durability

The Molecule AirTEC Mattress Topper is made with high-quality materials. With its medium firmness level, it should have a lifespan on par with other memory foam mattress toppers.

Conforming

Like most memory foam toppers, the Molecule AirTEC Mattress Topper contours closely to the body. The highly conforming foam helps promote spinal alignment for those who sleep on their side.

Temperature Control

Made with a cooling cover, open-cell memory foam, and proprietary AirTEC foam, the Molecule AirTEC Mattress Topper offers outstanding temperature control. This mattress topper is an attractive option for sleepers who struggle to stay cool.

Motion Isolation

As is typical with memory foam mattress toppers, the Molecule AirTEC Mattress Topper offers very good motion isolation. This may be an important consideration for couples who are sensitive to each other’s movements throughout the night.

Sex

The close-conforming memory foam in the Molecule AirTEC Mattress Topper may inhibit movement and make it difficult to switch positions. Although the mattress contains layers of more responsive foams underneath, couples may prefer a bouncier surface for sex.

Off-Gassing and Odor Potential

After manufacturing, memory foam and polyfoam may release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can give mattress toppers a chemical smell referred to as off-gassing. While VOCs are not typically considered harmful, some sleepers can find the smell bothersome.

The Molecule AirTEC Mattress Topper does not produce a particularly strong scent. Any off-gassing should not be too powerful, and it should fade fairly quickly through the open-cell foams.

Cleaning and Care

If they are not protected, mattress toppers can start to absorb sweat, body oils, or other contaminants over time. Using a mattress protector or a fitted sheet may protect the mattress topper from stains and odor buildup. Periodically deep-cleaning the mattress topper can also help extend its lifespan.

Common ways to clean mattress toppers include removing the topper from the bed to air out, or sprinkling it with baking soda, letting it sit for 8 hours, and then vacuuming it. Following the manufacturer’s care guidelines can help you keep your mattress topper in the best condition possible.

Molecule recommends spot cleaning the AirTEC Mattress Topper with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser, and avoiding harsh chemicals such as bleach. Although the topper has a cover, the cover should not be machine washed or tumble dried. Using inappropriate cleaning products may void the warranty.

Sleeping Style and Body Weight

Side Sleepers

The Molecule AirTEC Mattress Topper performs exceptionally well for side sleepers of all body types.

The highly conforming foam helps distribute body weight and prevent excessive stress at the hips and shoulders. While individuals over 230 pounds often experience excessive sinking in weight-bearing areas, the firmer polyfoam layers provide the needed support to promote proper spinal alignment for these sleepers as well.

Back Sleepers

The medium firmness of the Molecule AirTEC Mattress Topper offers enough support for most back sleepers.

The supportive polyfoam layers provide a deep cradle, and the conforming memory foam lifts the lumbar area to reduce pressure buildup in the lower back. Although some back sleepers might prefer a firmer surface, this mattress topper should meet the needs of most individuals.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers require a sleep surface that is firm enough to prevent sinkage around the abdomen. Those who weigh less than 230 pounds place less pressure on the bed, and should receive decent support from the Molecule AirTEC Mattress Topper.

Stomach sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds may find that this mattress topper is too soft. This may allow the hips to sink in too far, causing the spine to arch unnaturally and potentially leading to back pain.
