NOVA Special Looks at Dreams

What are dreams and why do we have them? The mystery of why we dream is a topic that has puzzled humans since the beginning of recorded history. A recent NOVA special on PBS interviewed researchers who are conducting various neurological and psychological experiments to investigate the reason behind dreaming. While these experiments can reveal crucial information about what occurs during sleep, there is still a lot we don't know. Patrick McNamara, a research team leader at Boston University, tells NOVA, "There is no technology that allows us to know with 100 percent certainty that a person is dreaming," adding, "Unfortunately, the best way to find out if a person is dreaming is to wake them up and ask them."
