Established in 1990, the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) is an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to improving public health and safety by achieving understanding of sleep and sleep disorders and supporting education, sleep-related research, and advocacy. NSF develops programs and provides outreach for public awareness, addresses public policy issues ranging from the effect of long work hours on sleep and alertness to prevention of drowsy driving, and supports post-doctoral research fellowships.

Marketing/Communications Manager

The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) seeks a Marketing/Communications Manager to implement communications strategies, manage media relations efforts and produce and/or oversee key organizational written and electronic communications. This position is responsible for stewarding existing products and services into a coherent organizational strategy including leadership and new thinking on brand identity, style and strategic marketing. The ideal candidate will be a creative thinker, skilled writer, knowledgeable of the public relations discipline and eager to advance public awareness of sleep and health.

Responsibilities:

  • Create strategic marketing campaigns for existing products and services, including educational conferences, print publications, sales, and membership programs;
  • Write press releases, media alerts, fact sheets and key NSF correspondence;
  • Play a central role for the Sleep in America public opinion poll;
  • Coordinate NSF’s weekly electronic newsletter;
  • Work closely with the Web team to develop feature articles, promotions, interactive tools and other online products;
  • Write and edit feature articles for SleepMatters, NSF’s quarterly print publication;
  • Write and edit educational brochures on sleep and related topics;
  • Produce NSF's annual report.

Qualifications:

  • Three years professional experience in marketing, media or journalism; experience in Web production, publishing or advertising also helpful;
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in journalism, marketing, communications, life sciences or related fields;
  • Ability to write for a variety of audiences (e.g., medical, lay) using a range of editorial styles (e.g., news, magazine and Web);
  • Interest in public health preferred;
  • Spanish fluency is a plus.

Assistant Director of Development

The Assistant Director of Development is responsible for diverse fundraising and development activities requiring an ability to initiate projects and coordinate fundraising activities for the National Sleep Foundation. In close collaboration with CEO, senior directors and other staff, the Assistant Director of Development implements an integrated and comprehensive annual development plan to meet or exceed annual revenue goals. The Assistant Director of Development reports to the Senior Director of Marketing and Development and fulfills assignments with minimal supervision. The Assistant Director of Development oversees development department’s day-to-day operations and is expected to assume an active leadership role.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute strategies to include prospect management, budgets, timelines, relationship management, analysis and follow-up strategies in development activities such as campaigns, corporate giving, board fundraising, membership, foundation grants, direct mail, advertising, and event-based fundraising.
  • Identify internal and external resources to research and track prospects, donors and other relevant information.
  • Solicit and cultivate prospects and develop appropriate solicitation correspondence and proposals.
  • Maintains effective processes for office communications, records, budgetary and financial operations, and administrative procedures as they pertain to development responsibilities.
  • Communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences, including board members, corporate executives, individual donors, volunteers and vendors.
  • Oversee the proper usage of the organization’s master database consistent with NSF’s administrative and fundraising needs including donor files, mailing lists, and accounting records.
  • Organize special events, secure necessary vendors and produce related written materials.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations and manage development staff.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree
  • Five to seven years professional experience in fundraising or marketing/sales to include two or more years management experience supervising a staff of two or more
  • Familiarity with non-profit, pharmaceutical, and health fields a plus
  • Demonstrated experience with a broad variety of development efforts
  • Ability to take initiative and prioritize work; meet established goals; learn channels of communication
  • Experience leading/managing staff or project teams
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others in groups and individually to achieve department goals and objectives
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize information
  • Mature, confident self-starter who is comfortable handling multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent organizational, communication and writing skills. High attention to detail.
  • Travel when needed
  • Working knowledge of database software a plus (Kintera, Raiser’s Edge, etc.)

Development Coordinator

The Development Coordinator is an integral team member of the development department responsible for coordinating and assisting in all areas of the fundraising campaigns, including the annual awards dinner, corporate and foundation proposals, individual and professional memberships, print and web site advertisers, and e-commerce retailers. This position performs development duties such as researching and soliciting prospects; producing donor correspondence, fundraising mailings and standardized reports; maintaining the Foundation’s database; coordinating projects with other staff and vendors; and providing general administrative support as needed. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Development.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two years experience in fundraising, marketing or sales;
  • Must be comfortable calling prospective corporate and individual donors;
  • Ability to work well with others and demonstrate good oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to organize, track and maintain detailed records;
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and adjust accordingly to changing priorities;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications;
  • Working knowledge of database software a plus (Access, Raiser’s Edge, etc.);
  • Bachelor’s degree
