Michael V. Vitiello, PhD is Professor Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, University of Washington, Seattle, and is an internationally recognized expert in sleep and sleep disorders in aging. Funded by several of the National Institutes of Health for more than 25 years, his research focuses on the causes, consequences and treatments of sleep disturbance in the elderly. Dr. Vitiello received two Independent Scientist (K02) Research Career Awards from the National Institute of Mental Health. He is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and editor-in-chief (for the Americas) of Sleep Medicine Reviews. A past member of the board of directors of the Sleep Research Society (SRS), he is the incoming Program Chair for the Meetings of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies (APSS). Dr. Vitiello received his A.B. from Columbia University and his PhD from the University of Washington.
