Men and Women Report Different Sleep Needs

The 2012 Bedroom Poll found that women report both needing and getting more sleep than men. More
than one-third of women (37%) say that they need eight or more hours of sleep a night, while only one-
fourth of men say the same (23%). On average, women report sleeping 7.6 hours per night during the
week, while men report sleeping an average of 7.2 hours.

Despite getting more sleep, women report more sleep disturbances from their bed partners than men.
Almost one-half of women (41%) say that their partner’s snoring affected their ability to get a good
night’s sleep, compared to about one-fourth of men (23%). Women are almost twice as likely to say that
partner movement also affects their sleep (27%, compared to 16% of men).
