2012 Awards Dinner
The annual Awards Dinner is the single event at which the Foundation recognizes individuals and organizations that have made major contributions to the field of sleep. It attracts thought leaders, scientists, researchers and industry executives as well as physicians attending the annual Sleep Health and Safety Conference. The Awards Dinner serves as a national platform for which National Sleep Foundation recognizes individuals and organizations that have contributed to the sleep and health fields, and announces its major educational and public awareness campaigns. Funds raised by the dinner support the National Sleep Foundation's ongoing public education and awareness programs throughout the year.

Awards Dinner Featured Speaker: Jerome M. Siegel, PhD Jerry Siegel is Professor of Psychiatry at University of California Los Angeles, former President of the Sleep Research Society, the recipient of MERIT and Javits Awards from National Institutes of Health and the Distinguished Scientist Award from the Sleep Research Society. He has studied the phylogeny of sleep as a clue to sleep function, discovering that the primitive mammal platypus has REM sleep and that marine mammals can go without extended periods of sleep for long periods without ill effects. This work has led him to propose the Adaptive Theory of Sleep. This theory explains variations in the amounts of sleep across species in terms of adaptation to environmental demands rather than in terms of regulation of brain function.
